Job description

Joining Arup

Arup’s purpose, shared values and collaborative approach have set us apart for over 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world.

Our Ground Engineering team brings together geo-environmental, geological and engineering specialists. We work across a wide range of sectors including energy, transport, water and property, delivering sustainable solutions to complex ground-related challenges. With strong connections across the UK and globally, we combine local expertise with global insight to support our clients and communities.

At Arup, you will be part of an inclusive and supportive environment where knowledge is shared, curiosity is encouraged and individuals are supported to grow their careers while contributing to work that makes a positive difference.

The Opportunity

We have an exciting opportunity for a Geo-environmental Engineer to join our established and growing team, to strengthen the geo-environmental capability in the Midlands, Wales and West. This role can be based in either Birmingham or Nottingham.

In this role, you will support and deliver geo-environmental work across a wide range of projects and sectors. You will contribute to technically challenging projects from initial site investigation through to design, construction support and verification, working closely with multidisciplinary teams, contractors, clients and regulators.

You will help deliver brownfield and contaminated land projects, undertaking technical assessments and contributing to practical and sustainable solutions. This role provides an excellent opportunity to further develop your geo-environmental expertise while building broader ground engineering experience within a supportive and collaborative team.

  • Supporting delivery of brownfield projects, contaminated land projects and geo-environmental aspects of multidisciplinary projects.

  • Contributing to the planning, delivery and interpretation of ground investigations and associated laboratory testing programmes.

  • Undertaking and assisting with contaminated land risk assessments, materials management assessments and remediation strategies.

  • Analysing field and laboratory data to develop conceptual ground models and project-specific solutions.

  • Preparing technical reports and communicating findings clearly to project teams, clients and stakeholders.

  • Collaborating with geotechnical, environmental and wider multidisciplinary teams across Arup.

  • Supporting client relationships through high-quality technical delivery and professional communication.

  • Managing allocated work packages and supporting successful project delivery.

Is this role right for you?

  • We are looking for people who bring a combination of technical capability, collaboration and a passion for delivering high quality outcomes.

  • Degree (and preferably postgraduate qualification) in Engineering Geology, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, Geo-environmental Engineering or a related discipline.

  • Experience in, or strong academic understanding of, contaminated land assessment, ground investigations and geo-environmental project delivery.

  • Familiarity with UK legislation, guidance and best practice relating to land contamination, waste and materials management.

  • Experience in undertaking desktop studies and interpreting ground investigation, laboratory and in-situ testing data.

  • Ability to develop conceptual site models, assess ground-related risks and contribute to practical mitigation measures.

  • Experience with software such as OpenGround, Leapfrog or similar data management and interpretation tools would be advantageous.

  • A strong academic understanding or experience of geo-environmental project work involving emerging contaminants (such as PFAS) is desirable.

  • Ability to undertake contaminated land risk assessments including DQRA and modelling would be beneficial.

  • Working towards Chartership with a relevant professional institution.

***Unfortunately, we are unable to offer visa sponsorship for this role. Applicants must have the right to work in the UK at the time of application and for the duration of employment. Any offer made will be subject to satisfactory proof of immigration status.***
