Job summary
Upgrade your quality of life! We need a new colleague to join the Rheumatology team on the Isle of Wight due to the retirement of one of the two existing whole time Consultants. This post is based exclusively at St Mary's Hospital in Newport. There are no on call commitments. You will be joining our friendly team consisting of 2 full-time equivalent Consultants, 1 Wessex Regional Trainee Doctor, 2 Rheumatology nurse specialists and 2 osteoporosis nurse specialists as well as our great dedicated administrative team.

We are looking for a great new colleague to continue to deliver and extend the comprehensive range of Rheumatology and DEXA services that we offer to the island's population. The successful candidate will be supported in developing subspecialty interests and also encouraged to have a direct involvement in the Wessex Deanery specialty training programme as well as supporting the undergraduate training of Medical students from Southampton. There are also opportunities to develop mainland links or research interests as appropriate.

Please refer to the job specification and person specification for the main responsibilities of the role. The successful candidate will be required to have appropriate experience in Rheumatology and to hold (or be within 6 months of obtaining) CCT certification from the General Medical Council.

Job responsibilities
The job plan is a prospective agreement that sets out the consultants duties, responsibilities and objectives for the coming year. It covers all aspects of the consultants professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities. It will provide a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external. In addition, it will include personal objectives including details of their link to wider service objectives and details of the support required by the consultant to fulfil the job plan and the objectives.

The job plan, for 10 PAs will commence with 1.5 Core Supporting Professional Activities [SPA] with up to 1 SPA allocated for additional roles to be agreed with the Care Group Director, taking the total to 11 PAs. After six months in post the SPA allocation will be reviewed with the post holder to confirm there are activities in place to justify the 2.5 SPAs; any necessary adjustments will be made to a minimum of 1.5 SPAs. One SPA may be worked flexible and off site if desired in accordance with agreement with LNC.

The Job Plan will be reviewed at 3 months and annually thereafter by the Clinical Director/Lead Clinician.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • MBBS or equivalent.
  • MRCP or equivalent.
  • Entry on Specialist Register via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) or CESR

Experience Clinical Skills
Essential
  • Should have completed a recognised training programme in Rheumatology.
  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in Rheumatology.
  • Knowledge of current trends in speciality.
  • IT skills.

Audit & Research
Essential
  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit relevant to the speciality.

Teaching
Essential
  • Experience in post graduate teaching.

Management
Essential
  • Knowledge and understanding of current NHs issues.
  • Ability to develop services.
