Consultant in Learning Disability for Children and Young People

Job summary
This is a reconfigured community post as a 1.0 WTE Consultant in Learning Disability Psychiatry for Children and Young People (CYPLD). The post holder be wholly responsible for the community service in Coventry and Nuneaton and working alongside another consultant colleague who provides community CYP LD services for Rugby and South Warwickshire.

The post is based on a 10 PA job plan with a caseload of approximately 100 young people.

Main duties of the job
Doctors are expected to follow the professional rules and guidance as set out by the General Medical Council including Good Medical Practice and Maintaining High Professional Standards.

The post holder's main objective would be to provide medical input to the Coventry CYP LD team who provide assessment and treatment for children and young people of school age with moderate to severe learning disability. This will include completing assessments, providing consultation to other professionals, overseeing multidisciplinary treatment plans and appropriately prescribing medication if required.

In particular, they would be expected to assess complex cases such as:
  • where there is a significant risk of self-harm, harm to others or risk of neglect
  • where there is diagnostic uncertainty or complexity
  • where the interaction of potential illness and personality factors needs to be evaluated.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • Applicants must be on the GMC Specialist Register, or within six months of admission at the date of interview. Candidates actively progressing a CESR application and able to evidence expected inclusion within this timeframe will be considered
  • A postgraduate qualification in Psychiatry e.g. Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists
  • GMC registration and inclusion on the specialist register in psychiatry
  • Eligible for Approved Clinician status and Approval under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act
  • Training and experience in working with children and young people with learning disabilities
  • Experience in using recognised assessment tools for the diagnosis of learning disorders and the holistic management of such conditions
  • Ability to demonstrate experience of multiprofessional working
  • Experience of leading a multiprofessional team
  • Needs to demonstrate ability to work with children and families

Desirable
  • Experience of service development
  • Interest/experience in audit and Quality Improvement
  • Experience in research and teaching
  • Open to involvement and development of services within the strategic direction of the trust and ICB
  • Good interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Willingness and ability to be involved in the management of change
  • Commitment to develop the learning disability service with participation in the management and leadership of the service
  • Commitment to facilitate and develop learning and practice of others

Knowledge
Essential
  • Training and experience in working with children and young people with learning disabilities

Desirable
  • Experience in using recognised assessment tools for the diagnosis of learning disorders and the holistic management of such conditions
