Job description

Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead and Deputy Behaviour Support Lead

Southlands School, Lymington, Hampshire

40 hours per week, term time only

Salary of £23,334 per annum

We are now recruiting for dedicated Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead and Deputy Behaviour Support Lead to create, maintain and continue to develop a positive safeguarding culture as part of the safeguarding and positive behaviour support team.

The post holder will work across Education and Care to support with Safeguarding and behaviour strategies. Some flexible working is required in this role

Southlands School is an Ofsted-registered co-education specialist day and residential school with a registered children’s home. We provide education and care, supported by our multi-disciplinary clinical team, for children and young people aged 7-19 years who have a primary diagnosis of Autism or whose profile of need can be successfully supported by the use of autism specialist strategies.

The school is in the heart of the New Forest National Park, a beautiful location which is also close to the coast.

Required:

  • GCSE English & Maths (Grade C/Level 4/5)

Main responsibilities:

  • To support the Designated Safeguarding Lead in promoting outstanding practice for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
  • To follow child protection and other related policies and good practice procedures.
  • Ensure the prompt referral of cases of suspected abuse to the local authority children’s social care including Local Area Safeguarding Board Designated Officer where appropriate.
  • Ensure the prompt referral of cases to the Channel programme where there is a radicalisation concern
  • Refer cases to the Disclosure and Barring Service where a person is dismissed or left due to risk or harm to a child
  • Refer cases where a crime may have been committed to the police
  • Keep detailed, accurate and secure written records of concerns and referrals in line with company policy and procedure
  • Carry out weekly half termly audits of referrals to identify themes, provide learning opportunities and demonstrate impact of interventions.
  • Ensure the Designated Safeguarding Lead/Principal/Head of Education/Head of Care are informed of safeguarding concerns requiring external agency involvement
  • To be or undertake training to become a Thrive practitioner, make effective use of planned activities to deliver Thrive and other social and emotional programmes for children.
  • To undertake training including CPI Training and develop positive approaches to de-escalation and behaviour management
  • Maintain the learning/nurture environment to provide safe, quality provision for pupils
  • Establish constructive relationships and communicate with parents and professionals, in liaison with the appropriate school staff, to support the achievement and progress of pupils.
  • Deliver sessions 1:1 in small groups and with small classes of pupils (Primary or Secondary).
  • Using a positive, empathic relationship to provide information and advice to enable pupils to make choices about their own learning/behaviour and attendance and consequences of their actions.

  • The young people that you will be working with, have behavioural problems and have experienced trauma and so we would require an individual who will bring positive commitment to young people and has an awareness of their issues.

  • Able to work under pressure, sometimes in stressful and challenging situations
  • Self-motivated and be able to use own initiative.
