Radiotherapy Review & Late Effects Lead Radiographer ACP / Trainee

Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Radiotherapy Service at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust for an experienced and motivated Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) to join our team as ACP Review Lead & Late Effects Lead.

This senior clinical leadership role will lead the development and delivery of high-quality radiotherapy review and late effects services across the patient pathway. Working autonomously within an advanced scope of practice, the postholder will assess, manage and follow up patients receiving and completing radiotherapy.

The role will be key to expanding our Review Service and developing late effects pathways, supporting personalised follow-up, improving patient experience, and driving service transformation in line with national cancer priorities.

Applications are welcomed from candidates who do not yet meet all ACP requirements but have significant oncology and radiotherapy experience, with the commitment and potential to achieve full ACP accreditation.

For the right candidate, appointment via a developmental ACP pathway may be considered, supported by a competency framework and education programme, including completion of an MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice, Independent Prescribing qualification and advanced clinical competencies.

Main duties of the job

• Leading the radiotherapy review service and supporting the strategic development of ACP-led pathways.
• Delivering expert assessment, treatment management and follow-up care for patients receiving radiotherapy.
• Leading the development of late effects services, promoting proactive management and personalised care.
• Practising autonomously within advanced clinical practice competencies.
• Requesting and interpreting investigations within scope of practice.
• Undertaking independent prescribing (or willingness to complete training).
• Supporting service improvement, audit, governance and research.
• Providing professional leadership, education and mentorship.
• Contributing to multidisciplinary decision-making and pathway redesign.
• Supporting innovative models of care aligned with national cancer priorities.

Job responsibilities
As part of the multi-disciplinary team, and under the non-direct supervision of all the Consultant Clinical Oncologists. The post-holder will utilise their advanced level knowledge and skills to:

• Assess, differentially diagnose, plan, implement and evaluate individual treatment interventions for patients within the radiotherapy pathway by virtue of expert clinical judgement and close liaison with members of the MDT.
• Act as a clinical expert in radiotherapy treatment reactions (acute and late radiotherapy side effects) of direct contact care, able to make high level skills decisions, informed by advanced diagnostic, assessment and treatment skills.
• Use expertise and decision-making skills to inform clinical reasoning approaches when dealing with differentiated and undifferentiated individual presentations and complex situations, synthesising information from multiple sources to make appropriate, evidence-based judgements and/or diagnoses.
• Initiate, evaluate and modify a range of interventions which may include prescribing medicines, therapies, lifestyle advice and care.
• Exercise professional judgement to manage risk appropriately, especially where there may be complex and unpredictable events and supporting teams to do likewise to ensure safety of individuals, families and carers.
• Utilise complex decision-making skills to promote high quality care in unpredictable and challenging circumstances.
• Ensure compliance with their respective code of professional conduct and work within their scope of practice.
• Works in conjunction with the MDT to clearly define values, direction and policies impacting upon care.

Person Specification
Qualifications

• BSc or DCR(T) state registered Therapeutic Radiographer
• MSc Advanced Practice from an accredited pathway or NHSE ePortfolio (supported) route
• Registered Health Care Professional with a regulatory body
• Independent Prescribing qualification

• Leadership course
• Education/Mentorship/ Supervision Course
• Informed Consent Postgraduate module

Knowledge and Experience

• Evidence of teaching, education, supervision or mentorship in practice
• Demonstrable experience of management and leadership in practice
• Extensive depth and breadth of clinical demonstrable experience in relevant specialist area
• Recent demonstrable experience in clinical audit and quality improvement
• Experience of management and leadership in practice
• Demonstrable experience working at Enhanced or Specialist Practitioner level within a health care setting

Desirable

• Evidence of publication and dissemination of research
• Demonstrable experience of educational supervision of trainee advanced practitioners
• Development of professional and management procedures within own area and across several related disciplines relevant to service area

Aptitude and Abilities

• Demonstrates proven ability to take overall responsibility and accountability
• Able to critically appraise and synthesise the outcome of relevant research, evaluation and audit
• Proven ability to organise and prioritise own workload effectively

Desirable

• Enhanced IT skills - working knowledge of software packages such as word, excel and outlook alongside EPR, PACS etc
