Job description
Launch your career making a genuine difference.

Are you a Psychology, Education, Health & Social Care or Childhood Studies graduate looking for a rewarding career? Or perhaps you're an enthusiastic individual at the beginning of your professional journey, eager to gain invaluable experience supporting autistic children and young people?

Teaching Personnel are working in partnership with Step by Step School, a highly specialist independent school in Sharpthorne, to recruit dedicated Autism Tutors for September 2026.

Step by Step School provides highly individualised 1:1 education for pupils aged 4–19 with autism, enabling every learner to achieve their full potential through a personalised approach.

The Role

As an Autism Tutor, you'll work closely with pupils on an individual basis, helping them develop communication, independence, emotional regulation and life skills in a structured, supportive environment. Every day is different, and you'll have the opportunity to build meaningful relationships while seeing the direct impact of your work.

Responsibilities include:

  • Delivering tailored 1:1 learning activities.
  • Supporting pupils with communication and social interaction.
  • Encouraging independence and confidence.
  • Working alongside teachers, therapists and behaviour specialists.
  • Recording progress and celebrating every achievement.
  • Creating a positive, calm and engaging learning environment.

Who We're Looking For

This opportunity would particularly suit:

  • Psychology graduates.
  • Education or Childhood Studies graduates.
  • Health & Social Care graduates.
  • Individuals considering careers in Educational Psychology, Speech & Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy or Teaching.
  • Passionate people with experience supporting children, young people or individuals with additional needs.

You don't need years of experience—we're looking for people with empathy, resilience, enthusiasm and a genuine desire to help others succeed.

You'll Need

  • A positive and proactive attitude.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Patience and emotional resilience.
  • The ability to build strong professional relationships.
  • A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle (preferred due to the rural location).
  • An Enhanced Child Workforce DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one).

What You'll Gain

  • Outstanding training and ongoing professional development.
  • Experience within a specialist autism setting.
  • Mentoring from experienced SEND professionals.
  • Excellent preparation for future careers in teaching, psychology or therapy.
  • The opportunity to make a lasting impact on the lives of autistic children and young people.

If you're looking for a career where every day is meaningful and no two days are the same, we'd love to hear from you.

Apply today to secure your September 2026 opportunity with Teaching Personnel.
