Job description

Joining Arup

Arup’s purpose, shared values and collaborative approach have set us apart for 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world.

Our Geotechnics team brings together geotechnical engineers, engineering geologists, rock mechanics specialists and tunnelling experts to solve some of the most complex ground engineering challenges across infrastructure, energy and mining projects. Working as part of multidisciplinary teams, we help clients develop safe, sustainable and innovative solutions for underground spaces, transportation networks, energy assets and major construction programmes.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a motivated Rock Mechanics Engineer to join our growing geotechnical and underground engineering team in London.

This is an opportunity to work on a diverse portfolio of projects involving underground excavations, tunnels, shafts, caverns, rock slopes and rock foundations across the infrastructure, energy and mining sectors. You will collaborate with experienced specialists and contribute to projects ranging from early-stage feasibility studies and site investigations through to detailed design and construction support.

In this role, you will undertake rock mass characterisation and engineering assessments, develop rock engineering design parameters, perform numerical modelling analyses, and support the design of temporary and permanent ground support systems. You will also contribute to technical reports, engineering calculations and multidisciplinary design projects while gaining exposure to advanced rock engineering and underground construction techniques.

The role offers excellent opportunities for technical development, structured mentoring and support towards professional chartership or equivalent professional development pathway. You will work alongside leading specialists and develop expertise in rock engineering, engineering geology, numerical modelling and underground infrastructure design.

At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas.

You will have the opportunity to do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.

Is this role right for you?

We are keen to hear from from individuals with a strong interest in rock engineering, underground construction and technical problem-solving who are looking to develop their expertise within a collaborative and supportive environment.

We are looking for people who:

·Hold a degree in Geological Engineering, Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering (with a geotechnical focus) or a related discipline, together with a postgraduate qualification in Rock Mechanics, Rock Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology, Underground Construction or similar — or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and experience.

·Have a strong understanding of rock mechanics, engineering geology, rock mass classification systems (such as RMR, Q-System or GSI) and underground excavation principles.

·Have experience using one or more numerical modelling packages such as FLAC3D, UDEC, 3DEC, RS2, RS3 or PLAXIS would be a nice to have.

·Can demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving skills, together with the ability to communicate technical information clearly through reports, calculations and presentations.

·Enjoy working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams and are committed to developing technical excellence and progressing towards professional chartership or equivalent professional development pathway.

·Experience in consultancy, research, mining, tunnelling, digital engineering, GIS, LiDAR, photogrammetry, BIM workflows or programming languages such as Python, MATLAB or VBA would be advantageous.

What we offer you

At Arup, we care about each member’s success, so we can grow together.

Guided by our values, we provide an attractive total reward package that recognises the contribution of each of our members to our shared success. As well as competitive, fair and equitable pay, we offer a career in which all of our members can belong, grow and thrive – through benefits that support health and wellbeing, a wide range of learning opportunities and many possibilities to have an impact through the work they do.

We are owned in trust on behalf of our members, giving us the freedom, with personal responsibility, to set our own direction and choose work that aligns with our purpose and adds to Arup’s legacy. Our members collaborate on ambitious projects to deliver remarkable outcomes for our clients and communities. Profit Share is a key part of our reward, enabling members to share in the results of our collective efforts.

We also provide Private medical insurance, Life assurance, Accident insurance and Income protection cover. In addition, you’ll have access to flexible benefits to help you look after all aspects of your wellbeing and give you the freedom and flexibility to find the best solutions for you, your family, and your individual needs.
