About the Role\n

We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join a specialist SEND school in Derby from September 2026.

\n

This rewarding role involves supporting pupils with a range of additional needs, including Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD), Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), and communication difficulties.

\n

As a HLTA, you will work closely with teachers and support staff to deliver high-quality learning experiences, lead small group interventions, and support students to achieve their academic, social, and emotional potential. This role is ideal for someone passionate about inclusive education and making a positive difference in young people's lives.

Key Responsibilities\n

  • Provide 1:1 and small group support to pupils.
  • \n
  • Lead planned learning activities and interventions.
  • \n
  • Support students with SEND, including ASC, SEMH, and additional learning needs.
  • \n
  • Deliver lessons and learning activities in the absence of the class teacher where required.
  • \n
  • Adapt resources and activities to meet individual learning needs.
  • \n
  • Promote positive behaviour and emotional regulation strategies.
  • \n
  • Build positive and trusting relationships with pupils.
  • \n
  • Support pupils to develop independence, confidence, and resilience.
  • \n
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, support staff, and parents/carers.
  • \n
  • Monitor and record pupil progress where required.
  • \n
  • Support the implementation of EHCP targets and personalised learning plans.
  • \n
  • Help create a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment.
  • \n
  • Follow safeguarding policies and procedures at all times.
  • \n
Requirements\n
    \n
  • HLTA qualification
  • \n
  • Experience working with children or young people within an educational setting.
  • \n
  • Experience supporting pupils with SEND.
  • \n
  • Strong behaviour management skills.
  • \n
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • \n
  • A calm, patient, and resilient approach.
  • \n
  • Ability to lead learning activities confidently and effectively.
  • \n
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to use initiative.
  • \n
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting student welfare.
  • \n
Desirable\n
    \n
  • Experience working within a specialist SEND school.
  • \n
  • Knowledge of Autism, SEMH, ADHD, and additional learning needs.
  • \n
  • Experience delivering interventions and small-group teaching.
  • \n
  • Team Teach or similar behaviour management training.
  • \n
  • Understanding of trauma-informed practice.
  • \n
  • Experience supporting pupils with EHCPs.
