Key Responsibilities

We are pleased to offer an opportunity for an Apprentice Extrusion Operator to join the team, supporting the production of high-quality plastic products by learning to operate extrusion machinery, monitor manufacturing processes, and maintain safe, efficient production standards.

This apprenticeship provides a strong foundation for a future career in polymer manufacturing, offering opportunities to develop a broad range of technical, operational, and problem-solving skills while gaining hands-on experience with extrusion equipment, quality control, continuous improvement, and health and safety in a supportive manufacturing environment.

  • Learn to operate extrusion and associated production machinery safely and efficiently, producing high-quality products that meet customer specifications.
  • Follow all health and safety procedures, wear the correct PPE, and help maintain a clean, safe, and organised manufacturing environment.
  • Assist with machine set-ups, product changeovers, and the preparation of materials to keep production running smoothly.
  • Monitor product quality throughout the manufacturing process, carrying out checks and reporting any defects or equipment issues to the Team Leader or Engineering team.
  • Complete production documentation accurately and ensure records are kept up to date.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities to improve safety, quality, and manufacturing processes.
  • Work closely with experienced operators and the Technical Team, assisting with product and process trials while developing your understanding of extrusion manufacturing.
  • Take part in regular training and development activities, building your technical knowledge and practical skills throughout the apprenticeship.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the production team to meet customer requirements and production targets.
  • As your experience grows, you'll have opportunities to support and guide other team members, assist with troubleshooting production issues, and develop into a skilled Extrusion Operator.

About You

You thrive in fast-paced, hands-on environments and prefer staying active rather than working at a desk. You’re comfortable around machinery, noise, and industrial processes, and enjoy work where you can see clear, tangible results at the end of the day.

You follow instructions carefully and understand the importance of safety, quality, and consistency. Working to standard operating procedures feels natural to you, and you take pride in doing things properly. Reliable and punctual, you’re comfortable with structured shifts and routines, and can stay focused even when tasks are repetitive or high-volume.

You learn best by watching and doing, building confidence through practical, hands-on experience. You’re able to handle pressure without compromising standards and are motivated by developing real, technical skills over time rather than purely academic learning. You’re looking for a stable role with clear expectations and progression, where you can build a skill or trade and become a valued, dependable part of a team delivering consistent results.

Please note: You must be 18+ due to the nature of the working environment

Please note: A full UK driving licence is required for this role (Due to the location and the shift patterns)

Please note: All facial piercings and hand jewellery will need to be removed while working on site (This includes wedding rings).

Apprenticeship Eligibility

To apply for this apprenticeship, you must:

✔️ Be 18 or over
✔️ Not be in full-time education
✔️ Have lived in the UK for at least 3 years
✔️ Have the right to work in the UK

So how does the apprenticeship work?

You’ll spend at least 6 hours per week on off-the-job training, including virtual learning, practical activities, and applied assignments.

What your training will look like:You’ll follow a structured programme combining live sessions, online learning, and hands-on workplace training to build your skills step by step.

What could your future look like?

This apprenticeship will help you build the skills and experience needed to start your career as a polymer manufacturing technician and progress within the manufacturing industry.

Through hands-on training, you’ll develop the competence and confidence to operate and optimise production processes, monitor performance, and respond to issues in real time. You’ll play a key role in maintaining quality, safety, and efficiency across manufacturing operations. This programme can also lead to professional recognition, such as becoming a Registered Science Technician (RSciTech).

You’ll gain experience that’s highly valued across a wide range of manufacturing and production roles, opening up opportunities to grow and specialise within polymer processing and related technical fields.

We’re Tiro (pronounced Tea-ro — white, two sugars).

In Latin, it means novice, recruit, apprentice, beginner, and soldier — the perfect name for a company that’s been helping fearless apprentices join ambitious businesses since 2005.

We believe great apprenticeships help everyone. There are remarkable apprentices out there just waiting to be found, and fantastic employers waiting to nurture them.

We’re proud to help connect the two — supporting industries that make, test, and innovate; from polymer manufacturing and materials science to sustainable engineering and advanced technology.

At Tiro, we make great things happen for people.
And that starts with you.
