Caretaker – Secondary School – Chesterfield Start Date: As soon as possible Contract: Full-Time, Permanent Salary: Paid to scale A well-established secondary school in Chesterfield is looking to appoint a dependable and proactive Caretaker to join its premises team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who takes pride in maintaining high standards and enjoys working in a varied role where no two days are the same. Working closely with the Premises Manager and School Business Manager, you will help ensure the school buildings and grounds remain safe, secure and well maintained. From carrying out routine maintenance to supporting health and safety compliance, you will play a key role in creating an environment where students and staff can thrive. This role would suit someone with practical maintenance experience who enjoys problem-solving and working as part of a supportive team. School Information This is an 11 to 18 secondary school that is committed to providing an ambitious and inclusive education within a safe and welcoming environment. Premises Team The Premises Team ensures the school operates efficiently every day by maintaining the buildings, grounds and facilities to an excellent standard. As Caretaker, you will work closely with colleagues to ensure the site remains safe, secure and welcoming throughout the year. Your responsibilities will include: Opening and securing the school site each day. Carrying out routine maintenance and minor repairs. Inspecting the site regularly and identifying maintenance requirements. Preparing classrooms, halls and specialist spaces for school events. Monitoring heating, lighting and water systems. Supporting health and safety inspections. Maintaining external areas including pathways and playgrounds. Supervising contractors and monitoring completed works. Responding promptly to maintenance requests from staff. Maintaining maintenance records and compliance documentation. Assisting with deliveries and furniture movement. Ensuring the school site remains clean, safe and presentable at all times. The successful candidate will become an important member of the support staff team, helping maintain an environment where students and staff can focus on teaching and learning. Requirements Previous caretaking, maintenance or facilities experience. Good practical maintenance and DIY skills. Knowledge of basic health and safety procedures. Excellent organisational skills. Ability to work independently. Good communication skills. Reliable and flexible approach. Positive attitude. Commitment to safeguarding. Willingness to undertake relevant training.
