Job description
Caretaker – Primary School – Barnet Start Date: As soon as possible Contract: Full-Time, Permanent Salary: Paid to scale A welcoming primary school in the London Borough of Barnet is seeking a dependable and hardworking Caretaker to join its support staff team. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who takes pride in maintaining school buildings and grounds while ensuring pupils, staff and visitors benefit from a safe, secure and well-presented environment. Working alongside the Headteacher and Office Manager, you will oversee the daily upkeep of the school site, carrying out routine maintenance and ensuring facilities remain in excellent condition throughout the year. The successful candidate will be practical, organised and committed to maintaining the high standards expected across the school. This is a rewarding position where your work will directly contribute to creating a positive learning environment for children every day. Premises Team The Premises Team plays an important role in maintaining the school's buildings and grounds while ensuring the site remains safe and fully operational throughout the year. As Caretaker, your responsibilities will include: Opening and locking the school site. Carrying out routine maintenance and minor repairs. Completing regular health and safety inspections. Maintaining playgrounds, gardens and outdoor learning areas. Monitoring heating, lighting and alarm systems. Supporting contractors while they are working on site. Preparing halls and classrooms for school events. Reporting maintenance issues requiring specialist attention. Assisting with deliveries and furniture movement. Maintaining maintenance and compliance records. Responding promptly to maintenance requests from staff. Ensuring the school remains clean, safe and welcoming for pupils and visitors. The successful candidate will become a valued member of the school community, helping ensure pupils enjoy a safe, well-maintained environment every day. Requirements Previous caretaking, maintenance or facilities experience is desirable. Good practical maintenance and DIY skills. Understanding of basic health and safety procedures. Excellent organisational skills. Good communication and teamwork abilities. Ability to work independently. Reliable, flexible and professional approach. Commitment to safeguarding. Positive attitude and willingness to support the wider school community. Willingness to undertake relevant training.
