Job description

Location: Newport, South Wales
Pay Rate: £92.63 per day
Hours: 8:30am – 3:30pm
Contract: Full Academic Year

About the Role

Teaching Personnel is recruiting a Sports & Behaviour Support Mentor to support both mainstream classroom learning and the school’s Specialist Resource Base (SRB), working with pupils who have additional learning needs, at one of our partner secondary schools in the Newport area.

This is a rewarding opportunity for someone resilient, patient, and motivated to make a real difference in young people’s lives. You’ll play a key role in supporting pupils who may display challenging behaviour or emotional needs, providing consistency, encouragement, and understanding to help them remain focused, engaged, and confident throughout the school day.

An interest in sport or physical activity is desirable, as this can be used as a positive tool to build relationships, encourage engagement, and promote emotional regulation. While the role is primarily classroom-based, there will be opportunities to use sport to enhance participation and support wider school involvement.

There may also be opportunities to support or cover PE lessons during staff absence, for candidates who are keen to take on additional responsibility and develop their behaviour management and classroom leadership skills.

This position is ideal for someone looking to gain valuable school-based experience, and could be an excellent first step toward a career in education, coaching, youth work, or sports development.

Is this for you?

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A positive, proactive, and compassionate attitude
  • Experience supporting children or young people through coaching, mentoring, youth work, support work or working with SEN/ALN and challenging behaviour (desirable)
  • The ability to implement behaviour management and de-escalation strategies effectively
  • A commitment to promoting engagement, confidence, and emotional development
  • Dedication to fostering an inclusive, supportive learning environment

This Role Is Perfect For:

  • Sports students seeking practical experience linked to their studies and goals
  • Graduates exploring careers in teaching, sports development, or youth support
  • Individuals passionate about supporting and inspiring young people in the education sector

✔️ Requirements

To be considered for this role, you must be 18 years or older. Teaching Personnel can provide guidance and support to help you obtain:

  • Registration with the Education Workforce Council (EWC)
  • An Enhanced Child DBS registered on the Update Service
  • At least two professional references covering 24 months
