With a commitment to innovation, safety and sustainability, IES supports clients in building and maintaining resilient, future-ready infrastructure networks across the UK.

About the Role

Due to continued growth within our Power Division, we are seeking an experienced Electrical Distribution Project Manager to lead the successful delivery of distribution network projects across LV and HV networks (230V–33kV).

The Project Manager will be responsible for the safe, efficient and profitable delivery of electrical infrastructure projects, overseeing programmes involving both Overhead Line (OHL) and Underground (UG) cable works. Projects will typically include network reinforcement, asset replacement, new connections, diversionary works and refurbishment schemes for major DNO clients including SPEN, SSEN, UKPN and NGED.

Working closely with operational teams, commercial teams, clients and subcontractors, you will ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget and in accordance with contractual and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the delivery of OHL and UG schemes, including excavation, ducting, cable installation, jointing, pole replacement, conductor installation and network reinforcement works.
  • Develop and maintain project programmes, ensuring milestones and client deliverables are achieved.
  • Coordinate internal resources, site supervisors, engineers, SAPs and subcontractors to maximise productivity and performance.
  • Monitor project progress, identify risks and implement mitigation measures to maintain programme delivery.
  • Support outage planning and coordinate works in line with DNO operational requirements.

Commercial and Financial Management

  • Manage project budgets, forecasts, cost reporting and financial performance.
  • Manage subcontractors and subcontractor performance.
  • Ensure effective management of variations, compensation events and change control processes.
  • Work closely with commercial teams to maximise project profitability and recover contractual entitlements.

Health, Safety, Environmental & Quality

  • Promote and maintain a strong safety-first culture across all project activities.
  • Ensure compliance with CDM Regulations, ESQCR requirements, DNO standards and company procedures.
  • Review and approve RAMS, permits and project-specific safety documentation.
  • Conduct regular site inspections and audits to verify compliance and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Lead investigations into incidents, near misses and quality issues, implementing corrective actions where required.

Stakeholder & Client Management

  • Act as the primary day-to-day contact for clients, consultants and key stakeholders.
  • Build strong relationships with DNO representatives and project partners.
  • Attend progress meetings and provide clear reporting on project performance, risks and opportunities.
  • Manage customer and public interface issues relating to outages, access arrangements, traffic management and environmental considerations.

Resource and Team Leadership

  • Provide leadership and direction to site teams and project delivery personnel.
  • Support workforce planning and resource allocation across multiple projects.
  • Mentor junior engineers, supervisors and project coordinators.
  • Drive a culture of continuous improvement, accountability and operational excellence.

Experience and Qualifications

Technical Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of electrical distribution networks and associated construction methodologies.
  • Knowledge of DNO standards, specifications and operational requirements.
  • Understanding of CDM Regulations, ESQCR, G39 and utility industry best practices.

Commercial Awareness

  • Experience managing project budgets and financial performance.
  • Working knowledge of NEC3 and NEC4 contracts.
  • Experience administering variations and change management processes.

Qualifications

Advantageous:

  • HNC/HND or Degree in Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Project Management qualification (APM, PRINCE2 or equivalent).

Desirable:

  • SMSTS or SSSTS.
  • Street Works (01–08).
  • IOSH.

  • Long-term and stable work.
  • Opportunity to support critical infrastructure projects.
  • Supportive team environment committed to high safety and quality standards, alongside a self-delivery resourcing strategy.
  • Career development opportunities within a growing energy services company.
