Job summary
A fantastic opportunity has arisen across our Community Clinics and Mainstream Schools Speech and Language Therapy Teams. The teams are part of the wider Children's Therapies team, a supportive and dynamic team with many professional development opportunities.

  • Knowledge and/or experience of working with, a diverse paediatric caseload
  • Experience working with parents of young children
  • Experience of supporting the evaluation of service delivery
  • Experience in delivering universal and / or targeted level offers to mainstream schools
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multi-agency team
  • Ability to work flexibly and independently where necessary
  • Enthusiasm, imagination, and initiative
  • Understanding of the neurodiversity framework

The role will encompass supervision and and support of junior speech and language therapists as well as speech and language therapy assistants. The post holder will also support the development and evaluation of service delivery.

Main duties of the job
  • To undertake specialist paediatric assessment of children on own caseload, who may have complex presentations and from this assessment to formulate a treatment plan and carry out this treatment as an autonomous practitioner.
  • To work closely with parents/carers and school staff to support the child.
  • To work closely with children's mainstream school and local inclusion teams and other relevant members of the MDT.
  • To supervise and support undergraduate students, and be involved in teaching staff as well as those from other agencies.
  • To support the implementation of evidence-based projects, including making recommendations for change in practice and participating in departmental research and audit as appropriate.

St George's, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals and Health Group cares for a population of four million people in South West London and North East Surrey. Our sites include St George's Hospital, one of 11 major trauma centres in the UK and the largest healthcare provider and major teaching hospital in the area; St Helier Hospital, home to the South West Thames Renal and Transplantation Unit and Queen Mary's Hospital for Children; and Epsom Hospital, home to the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC).

After years of collaboration, our two Trusts became a hospitals group in 2021. While remaining as two separate Trusts, being a hospitals group will help us to collaborate more closely on research, and the development, education, and training of our 17,000-strong workforce.

Person Specification

Experience
Essential
  • Relevant specialist experience post qualification e.g. autism, DLD population
  • Experience of working with children with SEND in an educational or multidisciplinary setting (e.g. clinic, mainstream schools)
  • Experience completing assessments and developing intervention plans

Desirable
  • Student supervision / clinical education
  • Experience supervising junior staff e.g. therapy assistants, NQT
  • Teaching experience of in-service programs

Qualifications
Essential
  • Degree or equivalent in Speech and Language therapy
  • HCPC registration

Desirable
  • Evidence of successful completion of specialist short courses
  • Registered Member of Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists

Knowledge and skills
Essential
  • Well established knowledge of assessment tools relevant to the client group
  • A working knowledge of national policies and procedures relevant to the client group
  • Knowledge of appropriate therapeutic interventions relevant to the client group
  • Knowledge of a wide range of appropriate Augmentative and Alternative Communication aids for this client group
  • Understanding the roles of other professional relevant to the client group
  • Effective communication, monitoring, analysis and adaptation of interactions and responses within the assessment and therapeutic process
