Job description

Job summary
We have an exciting opportunity for an Anatomical Pathology Technologist at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust to join the Mortuary Department. You will be responsible for supporting the delivery of a high-quality, cost-effective, and patient-focused mortuary service, ensuring all activities are carried out in line with professional standards and Trust objectives. Working as part of the Mortuary team, you will assist in providing an efficient and compassionate service, contributing to the smooth day-to-day operation of the department while maintaining the highest standards of care, dignity, and professionalism.

Main duties of the job
As an Anatomical Pathology Technologist, you will be responsible for carrying out duties across the full range of mortuary services, ensuring activities are completed in line with departmental procedures and professional requirements. You will work within different areas of the mortuary facility, adapting to varying service demands and maintaining operational standards. The role requires flexibility to work across multiple locations, with the opportunity to provide cover and support at both Nottingham City Hospital and Queens Medical Centre when required.

Job responsibilities
Responsibilities of this job role

  • TO carry out mortuary procedures in accordance with established protocols, ensuring accurate patient identification, documentation, and record management at all times. You will maintain high standards of accuracy and professionalism throughout all processes.
  • TO manage the receipt, safekeeping, and release of deceased patients personal belongings, including clothing, valuables, and cash, ensuring compliance with Trust policies and departmental procedures.
  • TO prepare patients for viewing and identification appointments, maintaining the Viewing Suite schedule and providing a respectful environment for bereaved relatives while adhering to security and personal safety procedures.
  • TO support post-mortem examinations by assisting with evisceration, reconstruction, and diagnostic procedures, including the recognition and reporting of abnormal findings to senior colleagues and pathologists where appropriate.
  • To undertake decontamination, sterilisation, and infection control procedures for equipment, instruments, ventilated tables, and designated clinical areas, ensuring adherence to departmental safety requirements.
  • To participate in quality control activities, equipment troubleshooting, professional development programmes, research projects, and the review and implementation of departmental procedures and documentation

Qualifications
Essential

  • To be successful in applying for this role you will need:
  • Royal Institute of Public Health Certificate in Anatomical Pathology Technology or Level 3 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology (or equivalent competence).
  • Experience working within a mortuary environment, including participation in post-mortem procedures.
  • Competence in patient identification, receipt and release processes, mortuary documentation, and use of database systems.
  • Knowledge of infection control, COSHH, health and safety, HTA standards, confidentiality, and information governance requirements.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work accurately, sensitively, and effectively within a multidisciplinary team under pressure.
