Tutor & Mentor Job Description

Job Summary

Our Future Tutoring (OFT) provides education, mentoring, and support to children and young people who have been displaced from mainstream education. The Tutor & Mentor role combines academic tutoring with pastoral mentoring to help students progress academically, improve social and emotional wellbeing, and achieve positive long-term outcomes.

The successful candidate will deliver one-to-one or group sessions, assess academic and personal development needs, create tailored support plans, and build strong relationships with students and families. This role requires a flexible, patient, and motivational individual who can adapt to different learning styles and behavioural needs while acting as a positive role model.

Roles and Responsibilities

The Tutor & Mentor will provide both educational and mentoring support to children and young people aged 5–25 years, helping them overcome barriers to learning and reach their full potential.

Academic Tutoring Responsibilities

  • Create and deliver engaging lesson plans tailored to individual student needs.
  • Assess students’ current ability levels and identify areas for improvement.
  • Support students with coursework, homework, assignments, and exam preparation.
  • Mark student work and provide constructive feedback and progress reports.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of curriculum requirements and teaching methods.
  • Deliver sessions in students’ homes, educational settings, or online where required.
  • Communicate regularly with OFT Senior Managers regarding student progress, safeguarding concerns, or barriers to learning.

Mentoring Responsibilities

  • Deliver 1:1 and group mentoring sessions, including support with:
  • Self-esteem and confidence
  • Anger management
  • Behaviour and emotional regulation
  • Attendance and punctuality
  • Peer and family relationships
  • PHSE and life skills

Build positive mentoring relationships with children and young people experiencing:

  • Low motivation or confidence
  • Poor attendance or punctuality
  • Behavioural difficulties
  • Relationship or family challenges
  • Academic underachievement
  • Develop personal action plans for each student.
  • Maintain regular communication with Line Manager.
  • Support the social, emotional, health, hygiene, and independent living development of students.
  • Challenge and motivate students to promote resilience, self-esteem, and positive decision-making.
  • Work collaboratively with OFT staff, mentors, schools, and external agencies.
  • Complete reports, monitoring documentation, and administrative duties accurately and on time.
  • Attend relevant training, CPD, and team meetings.

Safeguarding and Compliance

  • Promote and safeguard the welfare of all children and young people.
  • Comply with all safeguarding, child protection, health and safety, and OFT policies and procedures.
  • Take appropriate action where concerns arise.

  • Confidence working independently and as part of a wider team

Essential Requirements

  • Enhanced DBS Check (permission for application of an Enhanced DBS check will be required if a valid Enhanced DBS certificate is not currently held)
  • Experience working with children and young people
  • Ability to travel to student locations where required
  • Flexible approach to working hours

Desirable Qualifications

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS),NVQ Level 3, GCSEs, A Levels or Functionskills.

Experience Requirements

  • Successful candidates will ideally have experience:
  • Experience in tutoring, mentoring, teaching, youth work, or pastoral support
  • Working with vulnerable children and young people
  • Managing challenging behaviour and emotional needs
  • Developing individual learning or mentoring plans
  • Supporting students in educational or alternative provision settings

Candidates without direct teaching experience may still be considered if they can demonstrate strong communication, mentoring, and support skills.

Working Hours

Tutors & Mentors are generally expected to work flexibly based on student needs. Sessions are commonly delivered for approximately 1- 3 hours per day per student, though hours may vary depending on placement and support requirements.
