Job Summary

If so, NHS Professionals are currently recruiting for Registered General Nurses to work at Southampton General Hospital to join the bank. As a Registered General Nurse your main role will be. To provide a high standard of individualised nursing care in accordance with agreed policies, through assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care for individual patients. To teach learners and other nursing staff in the ward environment. Being on the bank at University Hospital Southampton gives you full flexibility on both when you work and on what wards. University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust provides services to around 1.9 million people across Southampton and South Hampshire and with their specialist services including neurosciences, cardiac services, and children's intensive care unit they care for more than 3.7 million across Southern England and the Channel Islands. The trust is also a major centre for teaching and research in association with the University of Southampton and partners including the Medical Research Council and Welcome Trust. UHS gained foundation trust status in 2011. Every year the team of 11,500 treats around 150,000 day and inpatients including 50,000 emergency admissions.

Main duties of the job
We have flexible bank shifts and long-term placement opportunities for RGN available at UHS. Nurses are required to work in our theatres department We are looking for SCRUB NURSES (ODP/NMC)

Job responsibilities
PROFESSIONAL & CLINICAL
  • Maintain high standards of nursing care, ensuring that nursing objectives are achieved using a systematic approach to nursing care.
  • Be responsive to the critically ill patients fluctuating condition/response to treatments and alter plan of care accordingly. Continuously utilise skills to interpret changes in the patients condition.
  • Use clinical judgement to reassess and evaluate patient response to treatment/intervention. Take appropriate action in response to this within treatment guidelines.
  • Maintain appropriate level of competence and being aware of personal limitations.
  • Assess, plan, deliver and evaluate individualised patient & family centred care and provide support and advice to other staff as appropriate.
  • Receive patients and their relatives in accordance with recognised policies and ensure that they are kept informed of treatment and progress.
  • Arrange the care of patient's property, in accordance with Unit policies and within the limitations of hospital responsibilities.
  • Liaise with all members of the multi-professional team to ensure that all treatments are correctly carried out in accordance with given policy.
  • Give and receive regular reports on the progress of patients, reporting immediately any changes in the patients condition to the Senior Nurse on duty or the medical staff as appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate records of observation, treatment, and care.
  • Participate in the checking and administration of prescribed drugs (including controlled drugs) and other substances in accordance with Trust policy. Demonstrate competence in administration of complex intravenous therapies and titrate doses within prescribed limits.
  • Inform the sister/Charge Nurse of any untoward incidents or problems affecting patients/staff/relative and visitors.
  • Inform Senior Sister/Charge Nurse any complaint received verbally from patients or relatives.
  • Adhere to the NMC Code of Conduct and Trust policies and procedures. Be familiar with the location of current files, and maintain up-to-date knowledge of Resuscitation, Health and Safety, Fire, Infection Control, Major Incident and Risk Management procedures.
  • Act as an effective role model by using professional standards relating to attitudes, appearance, and conduct.
  • Co-ordinate the requirements and take part in the transfer of patients to other departments within the Trust.
  • Take part in the admission and discharge patients to the department in accordance with Trust and departmental policies.
  • Maintain good liaison with other nursing units and other hospital departments.
  • Be familiar with and able to trouble-shoot all regularly used complex equipment. Ensure all medical equipment is functional, reporting any faults or potential hazards and arranging for replacement as necessary.
  • Keep up to date with changing procedures and clinical developments and be aware of relevant research that could influence practice.
  • Participate in the initiation of changes in practice to improve the quality of patient care and contribute to the development/revision of clinical guidelines.
  • Participate in the intra and inter-hospital transport service of patients

PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
  • Help create an environment that is conducive with learning and development.
  • Be involved in teaching, orientation, and mentorship of junior staff as appropriate.
  • Provide support and advice to colleagues to enable development of prioritisation skills.
  • Be involved in and support other trained nurses in the Continuous Assessment of Practice for learners and the assessment of competencies.
  • Take personal responsibility for professional self-development to achieve a minimum of the NMC PREP requirements for trained nurses.
  • Keep up to date with clinical developments and participate in innovation and change concerned with improving the standards of care for patients.

Experience
Essential
  • Experience within vascular scrub
  • Experience with gynae / breast / obstetrics / laproscopic

Desirable
  • We are also looking for scrub nurses who can commit to a minimum of 2 days a week we have no demand for scrub nurses to work adhoc at present

Qualifications
Essential
  • Nursing / ODP Degree
  • NMC / HCPC Registration
  • Minimum of 6-months experience working as a SCRUB nurse in a NHS or private (UK) hospital in the past 2-years
