Job description

Joining Arup

Arup’s purpose, shared values and collaborative approach have set us apart for 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world. Our Public Health Engineering team deliver projects across a wide range of sectors including commercial, property, science and industry, and education. We design systems for water supply and sanitation that help buildings work better for occupants, owners and the environment.

Our public health engineers tackle varied challenges – from fire suppression systems and drainage in high-rise buildings to supplying ultra-pure water and piping specialist gases and fluids for healthcare, science and industry facilities.

Watch this short clip to discover how Arup are shaping a better world and how you could be a part of it!

The Opportunity

We have an exciting opportunity for a Public Health Building Services Engineer to join our dynamic team in Nottingham or Birmingham. In this role, you’ll contribute to multidisciplinary projects from feasibility through to completion, offering expert guidance and working closely with specialists in building physics, sustainability, energy, carbon, and BIM. Our team is part of a wider regional network that includes civil, structural, fire, acoustics, lighting, and other engineering disciplines. Experience in the Science sector is particularly valued, as this is a growing focus for our practice.

You’ll provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior colleagues, helping to cultivate a knowledgeable and collaborative team. Your engineering expertise will be instrumental in shaping projects that align with our commitment to achieving net zero carbon, ensuring sustainable and forward-thinking design solutions.

Working in a multidisciplinary environment, you will contribute to the design of buildings that deliver maximum value to clients while minimising environmental impact. You’ll lead the MEP design on a diverse portfolio of projects at local, national, and international levels, ensuring technical excellence and maintaining high standards across all phases.

Strong project management skills are essential, including responsibility for financial performance and direct client engagement on fees and commercial matters. You’ll ensure transparency and alignment throughout the project lifecycle. You’ll also oversee the successful delivery of complex and concurrent projects through effective leadership, delegation, and team coordination. Reporting to the Project Director, you’ll ensure that all aspects of project delivery are executed efficiently and to a high standard.

Finally, you’ll play a key role in our digital transformation, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency through automation and enhancing our integrated digital design capabilities.

At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas. You will have the opportunity to do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.

Unfortunately, we are unable to offer visa sponsorship for this role. Applicants must have the right to work in the UK at the time of application and for the duration of employment. Any offer made will be subject to satisfactory proof of immigration status.

Is this role right for you?

We are looking to speak to people who:

Degree-qualified in engineering, building services, or a related discipline, and either holds Chartered Engineer status or is actively progressing toward chartership with a recognized institution such as IMechE or CIBSE

Has proven experience in public health building services design, including domestic water systems, gas systems, and drainage (foul, trade, rainwater), with additional knowledge in medical gas, fire suppression, and below-ground drainage design preferred.

Can demonstrate success in securing and delivering diverse projects, with the ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams and manage external sub-consultants effectively.

Has strong understanding of relevant legislation, design standards, and emerging trends, with a commitment to sustainable design and alignment with UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Is skilled in BIM tools such as Revit and AutoCAD, with a proactive approach to digital innovation and transformation in design and delivery processes.

Possesses excellent communication and report writing skills.

What we offer you

At Arup, we care about each member’s success, so we can grow together. Guided by our values, we provide an attractive total reward package that recognises the contribution of each of our members to our shared success. As well as competitive, fair and equitable pay, we offer a career in which all our members can belong, grow and thrive – through benefits that support health and wellbeing, a wide range of learning opportunities and many possibilities to have an impact through the work they do.

We are owned in trust on behalf of our members, giving us the freedom, with personal responsibility, to set our own direction and choose work that aligns with our purpose and adds to Arup’s legacy. Our members collaborate on ambitious projects to deliver remarkable outcomes for our clients and communities. Profit Share is a key part of our reward, enabling members to share in the results of our collective efforts.

We also provide Private medical insurance, Life assurance, Accident insurance and Income protection cover. In addition, you’ll have access to flexible benefits to help you look after all aspects of your wellbeing and give you the freedom and flexibility to find the best solutions for you, your family, and your individual needs.

Different People, Shared Values

Arup is an equal opportunity employer that actively promotes and nurtures a diverse and inclusive workforce. We welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds, regardless of age (within legal limits), gender identity or expression, marital status, disability, neurotype or mental health, race or ethnicity, faith or belief, sexual orientation, socioeconomic background, and whether you’re pregnant or on family leave. We are an open environment that embraces diverse experiences, perspectives, and ideas – this drives our excellence.

Guided by our values and alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, we create and contribute to equitable spaces and systems, while cultivating a sense of belonging for all. Our internal employee networks support our inclusive culture: from race, ethnicity and cross-cultural working to gender equity and LGBTQ+ and disability inclusion – we aim to create a space for you to express yourself and make a positive difference.
