Job description
Pastoral Support Worker – Specialist SEN Schools | Hampshire

Do you have the patience, resilience, and compassion to help young people overcome barriers to learning and reach their full potential?

Teaching Personnel is recruiting full-time Pastoral Support Workers to join specialist SEN schools across Fawley, Dibden, Totton, and Romsey.

These schools support children and young people aged 7–16 with a range of complex social, emotional, and educational needs, including:

  • Trauma and adverse childhood experiences
  • Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
  • Attachment disorders
  • Anxiety and school-based phobias

About the Role

As a Pastoral Support Worker, you will play a vital role in supporting students' emotional wellbeing, behaviour, and engagement throughout the school day. Many pupils have experienced significant challenges that impact their confidence, communication, emotional regulation, and ability to access education.

You will provide consistent, nurturing support, helping students feel safe, build positive relationships, and develop the confidence to engage with learning.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting students during periods of emotional dysregulation or heightened anxiety
  • Building trusting relationships and promoting positive behaviour
  • Helping pupils establish routines, resilience, and self-confidence
  • De-escalating challenging situations using calm and supportive strategies
  • Providing 1:1 mentoring and pastoral support throughout the school day
  • Encouraging participation in lessons and wider school activities
  • Working collaboratively with teachers, Learning Support Assistants (LSAs), and the wider pastoral team
  • Supporting students both inside and outside the classroom

The School Environment

These specialist settings provide an exceptionally supportive and nurturing environment. With small class sizes of no more than four students, staff are able to deliver highly personalised support tailored to each young person's needs.

Every class is supported by a qualified Teacher alongside either a Learning Support Assistant (LSA) or Pastoral Support Worker, ensuring students receive consistent guidance and encouragement throughout the day.
