Job description
Start Date: September 2026 Contract: Full-time, Permanent (Year-Round Framework) Salary: Paid to scale (Support Staff Framework) The Role A high-achieving Secondary Academy in Birmingham is seeking a professional, highly driven, and exceptionally organised Premises Manager to take operational ownership of the school’s physical assets, infrastructure, and statutory health and safety compliance systems. This position is ideal for an experienced facilities coordinator, estates manager, or senior technician who excels at tracking complex compliance portfolios, supervising technical workflows, and optimizing building efficiency across a large urban campus. The successful candidate will take full accountability for the daily maintenance, physical security, and operational functionality of all school buildings, hard court sports facilities, and communal spaces. Key responsibilities include leading the on-site caretaking and cleaning teams, scheduling planned preventative maintenance (PPM) tracks, and maintaining impeccable statutory safety logs—including fire safety systems, emergency lighting setups, gas safety records, and legionella water tracking files. You will also oversee the school's digital facilities helpdesk tracking platform, ensure contractor performance metrics are met during targeted repair works, and optimize the school’s energy efficiency via the building management system (BMS). You will work closely with the School Business Manager to manage asset registers, draft comprehensive risk assessments, and ensure absolute compliance with health and safety legislation (HASAWA frameworks). Crisp communication, deep data literacy, and a proactive, collaborative approach are required to manage unexpected building emergencies while upholding high standards across the academy estate. School Information This is an 11 to 18 well-established Academy in Birmingham with a powerful commitment to community service, operational excellence, and support team welfare. The academy serves a vibrant regional community and features modernised facilities, including advanced science labs, specialized technical workshops, and extensive media hubs. The premises and estates team are treated as an essential, core pillar of the wider school faculty. Staff benefit from a highly supportive professional culture, an open and approachable leadership team, and funded opportunities for continuous specialized training and technical safety certifications (such as IOSH, NEBOSH, or statutory testing modules). Requirements Proven experience in a facilities management, estate coordination, or senior site manager role, ideally within an educational or large-scale public-sector setting Solid working knowledge of current health and safety legislation, COSHH frameworks, and statutory building compliance tracking (IOSH or NEBOSH highly desirable) Good IT and data management capabilities, with complete confidence utilizing digital helpdesk software and logging systems Professional, objective, and proactive approach to team supervision and contractor management A background in a mechanical/building trade or an equivalent physical maintenance skill set is highly advantageous Application To apply, please send your comprehensive CV as soon as possible.
