Job description

Join an Outstanding Specialist School Through Teaching Personnel

Teaching Personnel are proud to be recruiting on behalf of one of Leicestershire's leading all-age special schools, for experienced and dedicated Senior Teaching Assistants to join their fantastic team.

With vacancies available at their Wigston site, this is an exciting opportunity to build a rewarding career supporting children and young people with a wide range of learning difficulties and additional needs.

If you're passionate about helping pupils reach their full potential, thrive in a collaborative environment and are ready to take the next step in your career, we'd love to hear from you.

About the Role

As a Senior Teaching Assistant, you will be a key member of the classroom team, working alongside teachers and other professionals to deliver engaging, personalised learning whilst helping to lead and support Teaching Assistants within your class.

This role goes beyond classroom support. You will contribute to every aspect of a pupil's educational journey, helping them develop academically, socially, emotionally and physically within a nurturing, inclusive environment.

Working within an interdisciplinary team, you will support pupils with a range of learning difficulties, communication needs and physical disabilities, ensuring every child has the opportunity to achieve independence and experience success.

Your Responsibilities

As a Senior Teaching Assistant you will:

  • Support teachers with the planning, delivery and assessment of personalised learning programmes.
  • Lead and provide guidance to Teaching Assistants within the classroom.
  • Monitor pupil progress, record observations and contribute towards annual reviews and educational targets.
  • Deliver small group and individual interventions independently.
  • Adapt resources and learning activities to meet individual learning needs.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils, parents, carers and external professionals.
  • Promote communication using a total communication approach suited to each pupil's individual needs.
  • Encourage independence, confidence and positive social interaction.
  • Prepare classrooms, learning resources and specialist equipment.
  • Support pupils during community visits, inclusion activities and educational outings.
  • Assist with displays, classroom organisation and maintaining engaging learning environments.
  • Participate in swimming, outdoor learning and therapeutic activities where required.
  • Contribute to the wider life of the school and support colleagues across the provision where needed.

Personal Care & Specialist Support

This is a rewarding but hands-on role where no two days are the same.

Successful candidates should be comfortable supporting pupils with their personal care and medical needs where required, including:

  • Personal care, feeding and toileting.
  • Supporting pupils with dressing, hygiene and developing independence.
  • Following therapy programmes designed by therapists.
  • Supporting pupils with complex medical needs following full training.
  • Administering medication and carrying out healthcare routines in line with school policies.
  • Responding calmly and professionally to pupils requiring emotional or behavioural support.

Full specialist training is provided by the school to ensure staff feel confident in all aspects of the role.

We're Looking For Someone Who:

  • Holds an NVQ Level 3 qualification (or equivalent) in Supporting Teaching & Learning, Childcare or a related subject.
  • Has GCSE (or equivalent) Maths and English at Level 2.
  • Has significant experience supporting children or young people with Special Educational Needs.
  • Can confidently lead and mentor other Teaching Assistants.
  • Is compassionate, resilient and patient.
  • Has excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Can work independently whilst also contributing positively to a multidisciplinary team.
  • Is committed to safeguarding and promoting the wellbeing of every child.
  • Is flexible and willing to work across different Birkett House sites if required.
