An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Electronics Engineer to join an innovative engineering business developing highly sophisticated sensing and measurement technologies for specialist applications.

Working as part of a small, highly skilled Engineering and Production team, this role offers the opportunity to take ownership of projects from initial concept through to production, working on cutting-edge electronic and opto-electronic systems in a low-volume, high-technology manufacturing environment.

Reporting directly to the Engineering Manager, the successful Electronics Engineer will play a key role in the design, verification and continuous improvement of new and existing products, whilst also supporting production, manufacturing partners and product lifecycle activities.

This is an excellent opportunity for an Electronics Engineer who enjoys working across the full product development lifecycle and wants to make a genuine impact within a collaborative and technically challenging environment.

The Role

As an Electronics Engineer, you will be responsible for:

  • Leading electronic design activities for new product developments.
  • Supporting and improving existing electronic designs and PCB assemblies.
  • Working closely with external PCBA consultants and contract manufacturers.
  • Performing functional testing, verification and quality assurance activities.
  • Supporting manufacturing and production teams with technical expertise.
  • Maintaining and improving electrical and functional test specifications across an extensive product portfolio.
  • Supporting design for manufacture and design for test activities.
  • Managing obsolescence issues and engineering concessions.
  • Participating in continuous improvement initiatives across engineering and production functions.

You will be involved throughout the entire product lifecycle, including:

  • System architecture and electronic design.
  • Schematic capture and PCB design.
  • Mathematical modelling and simulation.
  • Prototype build and testing.
  • Validation and verification activities.
  • Regulatory compliance and certification activities including CE, LVD and RoHS.

What We're Looking For

Essential Experience

  • Degree qualified in Electronics Engineering or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of five years' experience within electronics design, testing and low-volume manufacturing environments.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a methodical approach.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with internal teams and external suppliers.
  • Experience supporting products from concept through to production.

Electronics Experience

  • Mixed signal design, including analogue and digital electronics.
  • Small signal linear design.
  • Lock-in amplifier and detector design.
  • High sensitivity receiver and detector design.
  • Embedded controller hardware design.
  • Experience using microcontrollers, programmable devices and FPGAs.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, support and improve legacy designs.
  • Experience with communication protocols including UART, USB, I²C/TWI and RS485.
  • High-speed data conversion design.
  • Clock generation and timing circuitry.
  • Power management solutions ranging from 3.3V to 24V DC using analogue and switched mode converters.

Opto-Electronics Experience

  • Understanding of optical sources and detectors.
  • Experience with pulsed laser drivers and SLD/SLED technologies.
  • Knowledge of APD and PIN photodiodes.
  • Familiarity with optical modulators and variable optical attenuators.
  • Understanding of EMC considerations and PCB layout techniques.
  • Experience with temperature control systems using TECs.
  • Ability to analyse and understand complex opto-electronic system architectures.

Desirable Experience

  • PCB layout design experience.
  • Phase Locked Loop (PLL) design experience.
  • Frequency conversion and RF amplifier design.
  • Exposure to embedded software development using Embedded C.
  • Experience with VHDL development.
  • Knowledge of photon-counting detectors.

Tools and Technologies

Experience with the following would be highly advantageous:

  • Altium Designer
  • EAGLE
  • PADS
  • OrCAD

  • Optical spectrum analysers
  • Optical power meters

Why Apply?

  • Opportunity to work on genuinely innovative products and technologies.
  • Exposure to the full product development lifecycle.
  • Small team environment where your contribution has a direct impact.
  • Technically challenging projects with a high degree of ownership and autonomy.
  • Stable and growing engineering business with long-term opportunities for development.
