Job description

CORE PURPOSE We require an inspiring, highly literate English Teacher to deliver outstanding English Language and English Literature instruction across Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4, and Key Stage 5. Operating within a prestigious independent day school framework, the successful candidate will facilitate a knowledge-rich, text-driven curriculum designed to foster advanced critical reading, sophisticated analytical prose, and a lifelong appreciation for the literary canon, preparing all students thoroughly for exceptional outcomes in terminal GCSE and linear A-Level English public examinations. THE SCHOOL Our independent school operates as a premium educational provider dedicated to academic excellence, intellectual curiosity, and the holistic development of articulate, independent thinkers. The campus features historic architecture seamlessly integrated with modern learning facilities, including an expansive, state-of-the-art library, dedicated seminar rooms, and contemporary performing arts spaces. Characterized by small class sizes, highly motivated students, and a culture of academic rigor, our environment allows for deep textual seminar debates and extensive, high-level feedback, fostering a scholarly and highly collaborative classroom dynamic. KEY TASKS & DAILY OPERATIONS Advanced Textual & Analytical Instruction: Plan, resource, and deliver high-impact English lessons across all key stages, guiding students through close reading and critical analysis of complex prose, poetry, and dramatic works from Shakespeare to the contemporary era. Elevating Written Rhetoric & Essay Writing: Train students to a high technical standard in structuring sophisticated written arguments, deploying advanced essay-writing frameworks (AO2/AO3 analysis), and mastering stylistic mechanics, vocabulary, and syntactical variety. A-Level Literature & Language Specialism: Deliver academic, lecture-style modules at Key Stage 5, providing the necessary scholarly scaffolding to bridge the gap to undergraduate-level literary critique, creative writing, or linguistic analysis. Vibrant Co-Curricular Contribution: Actively lead and enrich the school’s co-curricular timetable, directing debating societies, public speaking competitions, creative writing workshops, and contributing to school literary publications. Holistic Pastoral & House Mentorship: Fulfill full form tutor and house responsibilities within our established independent school structure, supporting student wellbeing, fostering house spirit, and maintaining proactive, professional partnerships with families. PROFILE REQUIREMENTS Qualifications: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or a recognised equivalent teaching credential, paired with a strong honours degree in English Literature, English Language, or a closely related humanities discipline. Pedagogical Capability: A proven track record or clear capacity to deliver top-tier progress metrics and exceptional high-grade boundary retention in terminal public GCSE and A-Level examinations within an ambitious, high-attaining setting. Cultivated & Engaging Ethos: An unwavering commitment to academic excellence, possessing the exceptional communication skills, intellectual passion, and structural clarity required to challenge and stretch highly articulate young scholars. REGIONAL CONTEXT The Rose of the Shires & Literary Landscape: Based in the historic market town of Northampton, the school capitalizes on a rich regional heritage rooted in agricultural trade, industrial shoe-making, and deep literary connections. The town’s thriving cultural footprint—anchored by the acclaimed Royal & Derngate theatre complex and close proximity to historic estates like Althorp House and the inspiration landscapes of poet John Clare—provides an inspiring, real-world backdrop for live dramatic analysis, creative writing workshops, and historical context modules, connecting classroom literature directly to regional artistic expression. Connectivity & Infrastructure: The campus benefits from premium East Midlands and South East transport infrastructure, offering straightforward road commuting via the nearby M1 motorway corridor (Junctions 15 and 16), the A45, and the A43. Public transit networks operate efficiently across Northamptonshire, utilizing comprehensive local bus networks alongside Northampton railway station, which provides frequent, high-speed West Coast Main Line services via London Northwestern Railway, linking the school directly to Milton Keynes, Rugby, Birmingham New Street, and London Euston in under an hour.
