Major Duties

Our Nuclear Services team lives at the intersection of advanced engineering real world problem solving and some of the most complex environments in industry. We dont just design tooling and hand it offwe follow it through its entire lifecycle from early development to on site execution inside operating nuclear facilities and then back again to make it better the next time around.

What makes this team unique is the depth of ownership we have over our work. Team members are involved in designing commissioning deploying troubleshooting and improving specialized nuclear tooling used for inspection maintenance and refurbishment. That means the lessons you learn on site dont get lost they directly shape the next generation of tools and processes.

Nuclear Services acts as the bridge between engineering operations and our nuclear customers providing trusted expertise when it matters most. Because nuclear projects are often outage based and time critical our team plays a key role in ensuring tooling is reliable well maintained and ready to perform when the window is tight.

As a Mechanical Design Engineer you will design analyze and oversee the creation and implementation of mechanical systems and components; ensuring compliance with standards collaborating with various stakeholders and maintaining documentation and safety protocols.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform engineering calculations for machine and tool designs including strength speed horsepower temperature pressure and force.
  • Analyze engineering drawings and specifications to determine shape dimensions and hardness for equipment processes and products.
  • Assess the feasibility of using multiple machines for sequential operations.
  • Create working and detail drawings and bills of materials using AutoCAD and Solid Works.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable standards (e.g. OSHA CE).
  • Review drawings for accuracy material selection machining techniques finishes and hardness.
  • Liaise with customers in-house technical staff and vendors for technical information and specifications.
  • Communicate design changes and task progress to the Manager Mechanical Engineering and supervising designer.
  • Formalize and update drawing documentation.
  • Create drawings of existing tooling using precision measuring devices.
  • Supervise mechanical design efforts on a project level delegating tasks to team members.
  • Organize project documentation including quotes drawing registers correspondence requisitions drawings and schedules.
  • Communicate time estimates and resource requirements for design tasks to the Manager Mechanical Engineering and Project Manager.
  • Review electrical requirements with electrical designers and machine operations with programmers.
  • Assist fabricators machinists toolmakers and electricians in debugging integration and system completion.
  • Determine tools fixtures and equipment for fabrication and assembly of mechanical components.
  • Select and requisition appropriate purchased components for mechanical assemblies.
  • Examine project instructions and drawings to determine test specifications procedures objectives and test equipment.
  • Oversee co-op students and Junior Designers on various projects.
  • Adhere to ISO procedures and ensure compliance with the ATS Code of Business Conduct.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • A post-secondary diploma or degree in mechanical design mechanical engineering or equivalent.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 5 years of mechanical design experience.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD and SolidWorks.
  • Strong knowledge of drafting principles.
  • Experience in designing tooling from sketches or verbal concepts.
  • Understanding of pneumatics hydraulics and electrical devices.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Analytical skills for engineering calculations and design analysis.
  • Attention to detail for reviewing drawings and documentation.
  • Familiarity with ISO procedures and quality standards.

  • Work in conformance with divisional health safety and environmental procedures and compliance to legislative requirements
  • Refrain from removing or altering safety devices or guarding unless hazardous energies are controlled through lockout-tagout methods
  • Report any unsafe conditions or unsafe acts defect in any equipment or protective device and any accidents/incidents to the supervisor
  • Ensure that the required protective equipment is used for assigned tasks
  • Attend all required health safety and environmental training
  • Assist in investigating accidents/incidents where applicable
  • Refrain from engaging in any prank contest feat of strength unnecessary running or rough and boisterous conduct

The Compensation offered will be based on the local job market and may vary depending on factors such as the job-related knowledge skills experience of the selected candidate as well as other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical retirement and/or other benefits. Details of these benefit plans will be provided when the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment.
