About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEND Teacher to join a specialist school in Southampton supporting children and young people with Hearing Impairment (HI), Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN), Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), and associated communication difficulties.

This is a rewarding opportunity for a passionate educator who is committed to helping pupils overcome communication barriers and reach their full potential. Working with learners from Early Years through to Post-16, you will play a key role in developing communication skills, confidence, independence, and positive educational outcomes.

As part of a highly supportive multidisciplinary team, you will deliver engaging and personalised learning tailored to individual communication needs while promoting both academic achievement and personal development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging and differentiated lessons to pupils with a range of communication and additional learning needs.
  • Support children and young people with Hearing Impairment, SLCN, Autism, and social communication difficulties to access learning successfully.
  • Create a nurturing, inclusive, and communication-friendly learning environment.
  • Work collaboratively with Teaching Assistants, Speech and Language Therapists, Teachers of the Deaf, parents, and external professionals.
  • Develop personalised strategies that promote communication, independence, confidence, and emotional wellbeing.
  • Monitor pupil progress and contribute to EHCP reviews, target setting, and intervention planning.
  • Implement specialist communication approaches and resources to support individual learning needs.
  • Promote positive relationships, engagement, and successful outcomes for all learners.

About the School

  • A specialist educational setting supporting children and young people with complex communication and additional learning needs.
  • Provides education for pupils from Early Years through to Post-16 within a highly inclusive environment.
  • Benefits from a multidisciplinary approach, bringing together education, therapy, and family support services.
  • Offers specialist facilities, communication resources, sensory areas, and assistive technologies designed to enhance learning and independence.
  • Committed to enabling every pupil to develop their communication skills, confidence, and ability to thrive both in education and beyond.
  • Places a strong emphasis on personalised learning, student wellbeing, and celebrating individual achievements.

What We're Looking For

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is essential.
  • Experience supporting pupils with SEND, particularly Hearing Impairment, SLCN, Autism, or communication difficulties.
  • A patient, nurturing, and adaptable approach to teaching and learning.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Experience working collaboratively with families and multidisciplinary professionals.
  • Commitment to inclusive education and ensuring every learner achieves their potential.
  • Knowledge of specialist communication approaches would be advantageous, including Makaton, BSL, PECS, Signalong, AAC, Intensive Interaction, Attention Autism, and Total Communication approaches.
  • Understanding of supporting pupils with hearing aids, cochlear implants, or sensory communication needs would be beneficial.

What's on Offer

  • Full-time or part-time opportunity starting in September 2026 or October Half Term.
  • MPS–UPS salary with SEN Allowance and potential TLR opportunities.
  • Supportive and highly collaborative specialist school environment.
  • Access to ongoing professional development and specialist SEND training.
  • The opportunity to work alongside experienced therapists, support staff, and specialist educators.
  • Access to excellent communication resources and assistive technology.
  • A highly rewarding role where every achievement is celebrated and every child's voice matters.
  • Opportunities for career progression and specialist development within a growing specialist provision.

If you are passionate about helping children and young people overcome communication barriers and are committed to creating an inclusive environment where every learner can flourish, we would love to hear from you.
