Job description

You became a teacher because you believed every child deserved the chance to learn. Here, you'll prove it every single day.

Teaching Personnel is recruiting a qualified SEN teacher for an autism and complex needs specialist school in Horsham, with a September 2026 start. This is a school with a genuine reputation for outstanding practice — a setting where teachers have the time, the resources and the expert team around them to deliver truly personalised education and see the results that mainstream teaching rarely allows.

Whether you are an experienced SEN specialist ready for your next challenge, or a primary or secondary teacher who has always been drawn to specialist provision, this could be the role that defines the next chapter of your career.

What the role involves

  • Planning and delivering highly personalised, differentiated lessons for pupils with autism and associated complex needs, using a range of specialist frameworks and teaching approaches.
  • Working in line with individual Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and contributing actively to EHCP reviews, target-setting and multi-disciplinary meetings.
  • Leading and supporting a team of learning support assistants and individual needs assistants within your classroom, acting as a confident and caring team leader.
  • Using specialist communication approaches including Makaton, PECS and AAC to support pupils' expressive and receptive communication throughout the school day.
  • Building strong, positive relationships with pupils, parents and the wider multi-disciplinary team.
  • Tracking and evidencing pupil progress using appropriate assessment frameworks for specialist SEN settings.
  • Upholding the school's safeguarding, inclusion and high-expectations ethos at all times.

What we're looking for

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent.
  • Experience teaching in a specialist SEN, autism or complex needs setting, or a strong and evidenced commitment to moving into specialist provision.
  • Confident understanding of autism and associated learning profiles, communication needs and sensory considerations.
  • Strong team leadership skills and the ability to motivate and direct support staff effectively.
  • A creative, person-centred approach to curriculum design and classroom delivery.
  • Full-time availability from September 2026.
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to apply.

What's in it for you

  • Highly competitive daily rate paid via PAYE, or main pay scale to upper pay scale for long-term and permanent posts.
  • A permanent or long-term role in a well-regarded and well-resourced specialist school.
  • Access to specialist SEN CPD including autism training, EHCP practice and multi-disciplinary working.
  • A dedicated Teaching Personnel consultant who understands the specialist education landscape in West Sussex and will advocate for the right placement for you.

All applicants will require the appropriate qualifications and training for this role. Please see the FAQ’s on the Teaching Personnel website for details.
All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
Teaching Personnel is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. We undertake safeguarding checks on all workers in accordance with DfE statutory guidance ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’ this may also include an online search as part of our due diligence on shortlisted applicants.
We offer all our registered candidates FREE child protection and prevent duty training. All candidates must undertake or have undertaken a valid enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Full assistance provided.
