About the role

Birmingham City Council are looking for committed and compassionate individuals to join the Housing Solutions and Support Service as Homeless Centre Support Officers. This is a key frontline role where you will support the delivery of Temporary Accommodation services helping the Council meet its statutory homelessness duties and wider housing priorities.

You will play an important role in providing practical day-to-day support to households experiencing homelessness often in emergency or crisis situations.

The role sits within a growing Temporary Accommodation service including an expanding network of Homeless Centres across the city. These centres provide vital short-term accommodation and support forming a key part of the Councils response to homelessness while supporting households to move on into longer-term housing solutions.

This is a challenging but rewarding role working in a fast-paced environment where your will make a real difference to peoples lives.

What you will be doing

In this frontline role you will:

  • Support the process of moving homeless households out of B&B and into dispersed hostel PSL or other types of suitable emergency accommodation
  • Support the service to reduce and eradicate the use of B&B by ensuring B&B is considered as a last TA offer.
  • Respond flexibly to the needs of individuals and families including those with complex needs
  • Maintain accurate records including writing case notes and updating systems in line with service standards
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues caseworkers and partner agencies to improve outcomes for residents
  • Support residents to access services build independence and engage with their local community

About you

You will bring:

  • Compassion empathy and a genuine motivation to support people experiencing homelessness
  • Strong communication and customer service skills both verbal and written
  • The ability to build trust and maintain positive relationships with residents and partners
  • Confidence working with a diverse range of people including those with complex needs
  • The ability to remain calm and respond effectively in challenging or sensitive situations
  • Good organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities
  • Basic IT skills including the ability to accurately record information and use systems
  • A flexible and adaptable approach with the ability to respond to changing service needs

These roles are hybrid with working arrangements based on service needs and requiring attendance at face-to-face meetings.
