The Role:

Hampshire County Council is looking to recruit within our Safer Roads and Parking Team, part of the Traffic and Safety Group.

We are seeking talented and motivated individuals to help shape the future of our communities. This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing team and play a key part in keeping Hampshire moving and making the roads safer. In this engineering role, you will assist in the delivery and monitoring of Traffic and Safety scheme programmes.

You will be involved in identifying, devising, and delivering schemes and initiatives that enhance the safety and efficiency of the road network for all highway users, as well as providing support for other highways and transport functions. This will include working closely with external partner organisations such as the police, district and borough councils, and other public bodies and representatives, as well as internal partner groups.

We would love to hear from applicants who want to be part of a successful, road safety and community-focused Traffic and Safety Team.

What you’ll do:

You will play a key role in responding to a wide range of daily enquiries related to traffic management, road safety, and parking, carrying out initial investigations and helping to shape effective solutions. This will include supporting the development of schemes such as speed management, parking controls, lorry restrictions, and improved signage, while managing your own smaller projects and contributing to more complex initiatives.

You will work closely with county, district, and parish councillors, stakeholders, colleagues, and members of the public, building strong relationships and ensuring clear communication throughout.

The role also involves assisting with the preparation of technical reports, committee papers, and briefing notes, as well as providing guidance on projects and relevant local and national policies. Alongside this, you will undertake site visits and surveys to support the practical development and delivery of traffic and safety improvements.

What we’re looking for:

We are looking for an organised and proactive team player with strong communication skills and attention to detail. You will be confident using Microsoft Office applications such as Outlook, Excel, Word, and Teams or Zoom, and will hold GCSEs (or equivalent), including Maths and English. You will be able to work independently to deadlines while also collaborating effectively with others.

A good understanding of road safety principles and how to influence safer road user behaviour is essential, along with the ability to contribute to the delivery of highway safety or traffic management projects, including budget management.

Experience in traffic management, road safety, or highway engineering would be an advantage but is not essential.
