Join an Outstanding Team

At Hugh Baird College, an Ofsted Outstanding provider, we are committed to inspiring, challenging, and transforming lives. Our students are at the heart of everything we do, and we foster a workplace where ideas are valued, creativity is nurtured, and professional growth is supported.

About the Role Due to continued growth, we are expanding our Learner Support team across both our Transition Hub and Main Site.

While all roles focus on supporting learners with SEND, the nature of the support differs depending on the setting:

🧩 Transition Hub

You will support learners with more complex needs in a highly specialist environment, including:

  • Supporting learners throughout the college day, including breaks and enrichment
  • Promoting independence, confidence, and social development
  • Supporting health, wellbeing, and where required personal care needs
  • Working as part of a close multidisciplinary team

🎓 Main Site
You will work across curriculum areas providing primarily classroom-based support, including:

  • Supporting learners to access lessons and understand course content
  • Delivering 1:1 and small group academic support
  • Working closely with teaching staff to support progress and achievement
  • Promoting independence within a classroom environment

Important Information About This Vacancy

We are currently recruiting for a number of Learner Support Assistant roles across two areas of the College:

  • Transition Hub (36 weeks, term time only)
  • Main Site / Curriculum Areas (34 weeks, term time only)
There are opportunities at each site, with different working patterns and hours available.
👉 Please clearly state within your application:
  • Which setting you would prefer (Transition Hub or Main Site), or
  • If you are happy to be considered for all available roles

Interested candidates are advised to apply early, as the vacancy will close once the right candidate is found.

Key Responsibilities

As a Learning Support Assistant, you will:
  • Provide high-quality academic and/or vocational support, enabling learners with SEND to access the curriculum and achieve their individual targets
  • Support learners to develop independence, confidence, and effective study skills, both in and beyond the classroom
  • Work collaboratively with teaching staff to adapt learning materials and implement strategies to meet individual learner needs
  • Support learners during Maths and English sessions (Entry Level to GCSE) and assist with assessments and exams where required
  • Promote positive behaviour, engagement, and inclusion through the use of appropriate, individualised support strategies
  • Support learners during unstructured times such as breaks, lunches, enrichment activities, and (where required) off-site visits, encouraging social interaction and wellbeing
  • Contribute to the implementation and review of Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and Individual Learning Plans (ILPs)
  • Where required by the role, support learners with health, personal care, and mobility needs, including the safe use of specialist equipment
  • Maintain accurate records and contribute to safeguarding, health & safety, and learner progress tracking

About You

  • Experience of working with individuals with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) in an educational or similar setting
  • Experience of supporting learners with a range of needs; experience of Autism (ASC), SEMH, or more complex needs is particularly valuable for roles within the Transition Hub
  • A strong understanding of the challenges faced by learners with additional needs and how to support them effectively
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive, professional relationships with learners, colleagues, and wider teams
  • A patient, empathetic, and adaptable approach to supporting young people with differing needs and abilities
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team in a dynamic environment
  • Good organisational skills, with the ability to maintain accurate records and contribute to learner progress tracking
Please see the person specification for the full criteria.
