Job description

Looking for a career where you can make a real difference?

Maybe you've worked in the police. Perhaps you've been in the military, social care, youth work, probation services, customer service, security, coaching, or another people-focused role.

If you're great at building relationships, staying calm under pressure, and helping people overcome challenges, your skills could be exactly what schools are looking for.

We're recruiting Behaviour Mentors and Pastoral Support Workers to work across a range of educational settings, including mainstream schools, SEND schools, and SEMH provisions. No teaching qualification required, just the right attitude, resilience, and commitment to supporting young people.

Why schools value people from different backgrounds

Working in education isn't just about teaching lessons.

Schools need positive role models. People who can build trust, set boundaries, de-escalate situations, and support young people through difficult moments.

If you've worked in environments where communication, patience, problem-solving, and relationship building are part of your everyday role, you'll already have many of the skills needed to succeed.

Your transferable skills could include:

  • Building positive relationships with a wide range of people
  • Managing challenging situations calmly and professionally
  • Supporting individuals through difficult circumstances
  • Conflict resolution and de-escalation
  • Strong communication and active listening skills
  • Remaining resilient in fast-paced environments
  • Safeguarding and welfare awareness
  • Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team

What you'll be doing

  • Supporting pupils both inside and outside the classroom
  • Helping students regulate emotions and engage with learning
  • Acting as a positive role model and trusted adult
  • Delivering one-to-one and small group mentoring sessions
  • Supporting behaviour and wellbeing strategies
  • Encouraging attendance, engagement, and personal development
  • Working closely with teaching staff and pastoral teams

We're particularly interested in hearing from people with backgrounds in:

  • Police and emergency services
  • Armed forces
  • Youth work
  • Social care
  • Residential care
  • Probation services
  • Mental health support
  • Sports coaching
  • Security and public-facing services
  • Customer service and leadership roles

What we're looking for

  • A genuine passion for supporting young people
  • Confidence building positive relationships
  • Strong communication skills
  • Patience, resilience, and adaptability
  • A proactive and positive attitude
  • Experience working with people in challenging or demanding environments

Why work with Protocol Education?

  • Weekly PAYE pay, no umbrella company faff
  • FREE access to our CPD Academy
  • Ongoing training and development opportunities
  • Dedicated consultant support throughout your journey
  • Opportunities in mainstream, SEND, and SEMH settings
  • Flexible and long-term opportunities available

Changing careers can feel like a big step. The good news? You don't need classroom experience to make a difference.

If you've spent your career supporting people, solving problems, and helping others succeed, you may already have everything it takes to thrive in education.

Apply today and discover where your skills could take you next.
