Job description

Project Manager - (TALENT POOL)

Location: Remote (must be able to work to East and Central Africa time zones, with around 10% of time on project sites)

GIST is a global research, advisory and implementation firm tackling complex and high-risk challenges for our clients. We deliver strategic foresight and evidence-based advisory through in-depth field research and cutting-edge analysis methods. We also design and implement programmes that connect across local concerns and global systems and build institutional capacity for our clients to tackle their hardest challenges confidently. From training frontline actors and government agencies to co-developing innovative models with communities and the private sector, we find and implement grounded and sustainable solutions.

GIST operates across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, with multilingual teams and deep contextual knowledge. Our clients include governments, donors, NGOs, and private sector actors seeking impact in complex settings. We are trusted for our independence, integrity, and ability to navigate sensitive political and security dynamics. Clients choose GIST for our ability to distil complexity and convert insight into action.

About This Talent Pool

We are creating a Project Manager talent pool for upcoming and anticipated work in East and Central Africa, notably Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Mozambique.

PLEASE NOTE THIS IS NOT A LIVE VACANCY but an opportunity to register your interest in future Project Manager roles within our organisation. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and suitable candidates may be contacted as new projects are confirmed.

About the role

Project Managers play a central role in the successful delivery of projects across aid, security and development contexts, often in fragile and conflict-affected settings.

  • End-to-end project management, from mobilisation to close-out
  • Day-to-day coordination of technical advisory teams and consultants
  • Budget oversight, financial forecasting and value-for-money monitoring
  • Risk management, including maintaining risk registers and liaising with security teams
  • Donor and stakeholder engagement, including regular client communication
  • Oversight of monitoring, evaluation, learning and reporting requirements
  • Supporting recruitment, onboarding and people management where required
  • Contributing to organisational learning and future opportunities

About you

We are keen to hear from Project Managers who bring strong technical capability and the ability to operate flexibly in complex environments.

  • Experience in project management within the aid, security and/or development sectors
  • Experience managing projects funded by bilateral or multilateral donors (e.g. FCDO, EU, UN agencies, World Bank, USG)
  • Strong budgeting, financial management and risk management skills
  • Confidence working with diverse, multi-national teams and stakeholders
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills
  • A proactive, adaptable and solutions-focused approach
  • Comfort working remotely across time zones and travelling to field locations
  • Strong IT skills, particularly across MS 365, including Excel
  • Languages: Fluency in English is required. Proficiency in regional languages is a bonus

The Process

If you’d like to find out about project management opportunities as they arise within our team, please complete our application form which will tell us more about your skills and experience and what you are interested in.
