Job description

The Opportunity Southampton is a vibrant maritime city where a rich literary and historical past meets a booming modern digital media, creative arts, and global commercial sector. We are seeking an articulate, creative English Teacher to join a pioneering studio school . In this role, you will empower students to master the art of language, critical literacy, and persuasive rhetoric, utilizing the city’s thriving digital and cultural landscape to demonstrate how exceptional communication drives contemporary industry and creative expression. The School Operating as a specialized studio school, we cater specifically to Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5 students, delivering an innovative curriculum that integrates rigorous academic qualifications with real-world project learning. With smaller class sizes and a mature, business-like environment, our staff build strong professional relationships with students. We treat our young people as colleagues in training, focusing on developing independent thought, professional accountability, and creative problem-solving skills. The Department & Analytical Culture You will join a forward-thinking English team that rejects passive learning, choosing instead to blend classical text analysis with practical, real-world communication briefs. The department utilizes flexible learning spaces and digital suites designed to replicate modern creative workspaces, facilitating structured debates, editorial writing, and media production. Our curriculum prioritizes deep engagement with entire literary texts, exploring how historical contexts and shifting social landscapes influence language and narrative structure. We collaborate directly with local theatre companies, digital marketing agencies, and media outlets to give students real-world platforms for their writing and oracy projects. Core Responsibilities Contextualized Instruction: Designing and delivering high-challenge English Language and Literature lessons at GCSE, ensuring academic excellence is achieved through engaging, relevant contexts. Critical Interrogation: Training students to deconstruct complex texts—from classical drama to modern digital journalism—evaluating bias, subtext, and structural design. Advanced Written Rhetoric: Systematically developing students' ability to produce sophisticated analytical essays, compelling copy, and professional reports with grammatical precision. Data-Driven Intervention: Implementing targeted diagnostic assessments to identify learning gaps early, providing precise, actionable feedback ahead of terminal GCSE examinations. Project Mentorship: Guiding students through cross-curricular, industry-linked projects, helping them apply their communication and analytical skills to workplace-simulated challenges. The Successful Candidate We are looking for an adaptive, intellectually curious educator who is passionate about making English vital, practical, and deeply empowering for young people. Your profile should include: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a strong honours degree in English Literature, English Language, Media/Journalism, or a closely related discipline. Versatile Group Management: The ability to smoothly transition between structured exam preparation and independent project sessions with a calm, professional classroom presence. Oracy Advocacy: A commitment to developing high-level speaking and presentation skills, ensuring students can articulate complex ideas confidently to diverse audiences. Collaborative Spirit: A professional who thrives in an interdisciplinary environment, eager to co-plan projects with technical and creative departments. Why Join Our Faculty? A distinctly refreshing teaching environment with smaller student cohorts, fewer behavioural disruptions, and a mature atmosphere centered on mutual respect. Tailored professional development focusing on project-based learning pedagogies, alternative tracking methods, and pathways into middle leadership. The fantastic lifestyle benefits of Southampton—a dynamic coastal city offering a rich cultural scene, affordable urban living, and immediate proximity to both the New Forest and open water. A supportive, tight-knit staff framework featuring a realistic approach to marking and administration designed to keep your workload sustainable. How to Apply Please submit your current CV to begin the application process.
