Applications are welcome for the above Fixed Term, full time (40 hours per week) post based in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and Western general Hospital

This post is from August 2026 until 6th August 2027, start date may be negotiable.

We are looking for 2 motivated and enthusiastic doctors who have completed FY2 (or equivalent) to join our diabetes and endocrinology team. You should have completed the UK foundation programme and may be looking for more experience or time to boost your CV before applying to intermediate or specialty training. We also welcome applications from doctors more senior than immediately post-FY2 and roles may be negotiable dependent on experience.

The post will comprise a mix of daytime on-call weeks (roughly 1:3) and outpatient clinic weeks. During the on call week you will review in patient referrals and new diabetes and endocrine presentations to the hospital with the support of a specialty trainee, Diabetes Specialist Nurse and /or consultant. During clinic weeks you will have the opportunity to assist with a wide range of specialty and sub specialty clinics. We would expect you should have the chance to assist with 5-6 out patient clinics a week whilst not on-call

We have a clinical fellow position to offer at both the Royal infirmary of Edinburgh (RIE) and the Western General Hospital (WGH).

The WGH is a tertiary referral centre comprising different specialties reflecting a variable specialty inpatient on-call. Ward consults are provided for patients in oncology, haematology, infectious diseases, urology, lower GI surgery, renal dialysis and intensive care medicine. We also have a busy acute medical unit with a large acute frailty take to which we contribute

RIE is a busy tertiary referral centre with a broad range of sub-specialties. This is reflected in a highly varied inpatient on call, which includes reviewing the following patient groups: obstetric diabetes, pituitary surgery, cardiothoracics, orthopaedics and major trauma, liver and renal transplant, renal dialysis and acute stroke. Additionally, there are daily reviews of referrals from the busy emergency department and acute medicine unit as well as the cardiothoracic and general HDU and ICU as well as the coronary care unit and the renal/liver high dependency unit.

At the Western General site clinics running include

General diabetes clinic (type 1/ type 2); Type 1 diabetes technology clinic (including patients using hybrid closed loop insulin pumps); Ante natal diabetes clinic (including tertiary support for cystic fibrosis unit); diabetes-renal clinic; diabetes foot clinic; general endocrine clinic, Neuroendocrine tumour/cancer clinic; thyroid nodule clinic; endocrine genetics clinic

At the Royal Infirmary site clinics running include:

General diabetes clinic (type 1/ type 2); Type 1 diabetes technology clinic (including patients using hybrid closed loop insulin pumps); Ante natal diabetes clinic; diabetes-renal clinic; diabetes foot clinic; general endocrine clinic, thyroid nodule clinic; endocrine genetics clinic

The post will also include 10% dedicated time for quality improvement, audit or research work. There can be flexibility with projects tailored to your needs. Suggestions for potential projects would include improvement to in patient diabetes care (especially hypoglycaemia, high risk feet), direct referral to endocrine testing protocols; audit of antenatal care provision

The post at WGH will also include dedicated time for teaching 4th and 6th year medical students in a dedicated clinic, and on in patient ward rounds. You should have the opportunity to work towards a teaching qualification (clinical educator level 2 or 3)

Both centres have a highly motivated and supportive consultant team. We work within a large dedicated team of allied health professionals including, specialist diabetes and endocrine nurses, podiatrists, and dieticians, with whom you will have the opportunity to work.

The Edinburgh Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology has a strong commitment to continuing professional development and training. Opportunities include daily morning teaching (8.30-9.00), weekly journal club, and weekly complex patient MDM. All clinics are followed by post clinic meeting during which team decisions are made regarding management plans and allowing the opportunity for feedback and development in a supportive atmosphere.
