Job description
Job summary

The Acute Medical Receiving Unit (AMRU) is a brand-new service scheduled to open in Summer 2026, designed to deliver high-quality, rapid assessment and treatment for patients presenting with acute medical conditions. This modern unit will play a key role in improving patient flow, reducing waiting times, and enhancing the overall patient experience. The successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to be part of the establishment and development of this new service, contributing to shaping pathways, processes, and a positive team culture from the outset.

As an experienced registered nurse, the Band 6 will provide clinical leadership, supervision, and support to junior staff, while ensuring safe, effective, and timely patient flow through the unit. The role requires strong clinical decision-making skills, the ability to prioritise workload, and effective multidisciplinary team collaboration.

The AMRU will work in close integration with the Medical Assessment Unit (MAU), forming a cohesive acute medical service. The successful candidate will rotate between AMRU and MAU, gaining a broad range of clinical experience while supporting continuity of care across both areas. This rotational approach will enhance clinical skills, promote collaborative working, and ensure flexibility in meeting the demands of the service.

Hours per week: 37.5

Main duties of the job

  • Provide high-quality, patient-centred care for individuals presenting with acute medical conditions, ensuring safety, dignity, and compassion at all times.
  • Undertake comprehensive clinical assessments, plan, implement, and evaluate care for patients with complex and rapidly changing needs.
  • Act as nurse in charge of the shift, coordinating the clinical area, managing patient flow, and supporting timely admissions, transfers, and discharges.
  • Provide clinical leadership, supervision, and mentorship to Band 5 nurses, healthcare support workers, and student nurses.
  • Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to ensure effective communication and coordinated care delivery.
  • Support patient flow initiatives, including early discharge planning and escalation processes, to optimise bed capacity and reduce length of stay.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and legally compliant patient documentation.
  • Participate in audit, quality improvement, and service development initiatives to enhance patient care and outcomes.
  • Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control policies and maintain a safe clinical environment.
  • Contribute to staff development, including teaching, training, and supporting competency achievement within the team.
  • Act as a role model, promoting professional standards in line with the NMC Code and Trust values.
  • Support the implementation of new pathways and processes associated with the development of the AMRU service
