Job description

About us:

Make a difference and advance your career by helping deliver some of the UK’s most important #tech4good projects, making the world a smarter, safer, greener, and healthier place.

You’ll join a talented team of dynamic and driven professional problem solvers; creative thinkers and solutions builders who thrive on helping clients meet the most exciting digital transformation challenges.

At a certified Great Place to Work, you’ll experience a dynamic and nurturing environment that rewards initiative and flexibility and enjoy a career path tailored to your own aspirations.

Founded in 1992, we are a successful, growing International digital transformation consultancy. We deliver multi-Queen’s Award for innovation winning platforms and services that support large-scale digital transformation. Our digital, data and technology solutions are used by globally recognised public and private sector brands operating in a variety of sectors including Civil Defence, Healthcare, Sustainable Environment and Land Asset Management, and Digital Democracy.

The Role

As a Junior Software Engineer at Informed Solutions, you’ll play a key role in designing, building, and delivering digital services that tackle real-world engagements in the public sector. Your work will help improve outcomes for citizens and communities, contributing to a healthier, safer, and more sustainable UK.

You’ll be part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team, working alongside engineers, user-centred designers, data specialists, and delivery managers. You’ll take responsibility for delivering components or small services across the full lifecycle, learning from senior colleagues, contributing your ideas, and developing your technical and delivery skills.

Our consultancy is technology-agnostic, allowing you to explore and work with tools such as .NET, Java, Python, Node.js, AWS, and Azure. You’ll have opportunities to expand your expertise, gain hands-on experience with cloud and modern software engineering practices, and build a strong foundation for a career in digital transformation.

This role requires curiosity, adaptability, and a proactive approach to delivery. As a Junior Software Engineer, you will:

  • Deliver software components: Take responsibility for building and supporting small-to-medium components or services across the full software lifecycle, from design and development through to deployment, operation, and improvement.
  • Collaborate on architecture and design: Work with Lead and Senior Engineers to understand and implement architectural patterns, design decisions, and coding standards, producing clear and maintainable documentation.
  • Support delivery planning: Work with your team and Delivery Managers to plan work, estimate effort, and identify technical risks and dependencies, escalating issues when needed.
  • Contribute to quality and best practice: Write clean, tested, and reliable code, follow agile practices including TDD, CI/CD, and code reviews, and help ensure solutions meet functional and non-functional requirements.
  • Build stakeholder confidence: Communicate clearly with your team and, when appropriate, with clients and partner organisations, ensuring transparency in your work and progress.
  • Learn and develop: Take opportunities to grow your technical skills, learn from peers and senior colleagues, and apply new knowledge to improve delivery and team effectiveness.

Requirements

Essential Skills

  • Experience working as a software engineer in full-stack development, with proficiency in at least one backend language (.NET, Java, Python) and modern JavaScript frameworks/libraries.
  • Ability to develop and deliver software components or small services from design through to deployment.
  • Understanding of software architecture, design patterns, and modern cloud-native approaches (microservices, serverless).
  • Practical experience working in Agile environments (Scrum, Kanban) and following practices such as TDD, CI/CD, and iterative delivery.
  • Experience collaborating in multidisciplinary teams, supporting senior engineers and contributing effectively to team goals.
  • An understanding of cloud platforms (AWS or Azure) and related tooling for deployment and monitoring.
  • Good communication and collaboration skills, with a willingness to learn from feedback and adapt.

Desirable Skills

  • Exposure to consultancy or client-facing environments.
  • Experience contributing to public sector digital services or complex organisational contexts.
  • Familiarity with agile delivery tools such as Jira, Confluence, Miro, or Azure DevOps.
  • Enthusiasm for continuous learning, professional development, and contributing to team practices and knowledge sharing.

Key abilities that are necessary for success

  • Able to work effectively in environments where you can adapt to innovative practices involving uncertainty, change, and agile working.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and your time so you can deliver high-quality work within deadlines.
  • Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to respect and accept different perspectives and disagreement, work collaboratively in diverse teams, and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Good judgement and decision-making in complex environments where uncertainty, ambiguity, and risk must be collaboratively managed by working supportively alongside others.
  • Good communication skills, including clear, constructive written outputs and measured, respectful verbal delivery.

We work in a fast-paced, ever-evolving innovation and problem-solving workplace environment where no two days are the same. This requires you to have the foundations of personal resilience, professional adaptability, and flexibility in working alongside others with a positive mindset.

We appreciate that this workplace culture and the level of variety won’t suit everyone. However, after significant consultations with colleagues at all levels, we understand that these are the fundamentals of success in undertaking the complex, innovation work which is the DNA of Informed Solutions.
