Job description
Position: Youth Justice Worker – HMP Werrington Location: Stoke-on-Trent, Midlands, UK Job ID: 16934 Job Details * Starting salary: £35,875 for a 39‑hour week (including 20% unsocial) * Contract type: Pass * Potential visa sponsorship: Skilled Worker (may be available) Responsibilities * Ensure the security and safety of children and young people in custody. * Provide day‑to‑day support and interventions when required. * Oversee and facilitate safe movement around the site. * Supervise and respond to behavioural issues, de‑escalate situations and apply conflict‑resolution techniques. * Collaborate with young people, their families and carers to agree on interventions or referrals. * Work closely with other professionals and organisations to improve outcomes. * Exercise sound judgement, using evidence‑based approaches. * Participate in regular supervision with an experienced practitioner. * Complete a Level 4 Qualification after the 12‑month probationary period. Qualifications & Personal Qualities * Strong communication and influencing skills. * Commitment to high standards of care and service. * Empathy and understanding. * Effective decision‑making abilities. * Pass a DBS check. Eligibility * At least 18 years old. * Meet Civil Service nationality requirements. * Pass a medical and fitness assessment. * Meet eyesight standard in both eyes (with and without corrective lenses). * Have a suitable standard of hearing (without hearing aids). Pay & Hours The initial training is 37 hours a week. After training, you can choose to work 37, 39 or 41 hours a week. Your annual salary will reflect your weekly hours. * 37 hours a week: £33,746 a year * 39 hours a week: £35,875 a year * 41 hours a week: £38,003 a year Benefits * 25 days’ annual holiday (rising to 30 days after 10 years’ service). * Paid time off for public holidays and one extra privilege day. * Civil Service pension with employer contributions of 28.97 %. * Cycle to work scheme, travel loans and other benefits. Other Information All salary figures quoted include any additional allowances that are applicable to the role/location. Young Offender Institutions operate 24 h a day, 7 days a week; this role will cover shift patterns that include evenings, some nights, weekends and public holidays. Applicants should bring a suitable DBS check and evidence of fit for duty (e.g., medical clearance). Travel to work: a driving licence and own transport is beneficial but not essential, unless specified. Shift times are fixed; ensure reliable transport.
