An exciting opportunity has arisen to help shape the future of medical appraisal across our Trust. We are inviting applications for Appraisal Lead roles at each of our hospitals. This is a chance to play a key part in strengthening our appraisal and revalidation processes, deepening your understanding of professional regulation, and contributing to a culture of high‑quality, supportive development for all our doctors.
Main duties of the job
As we continue to align our approach with GMC and NHSE guidance, we are committed to building a robust, transparent and consistent appraisal system for Consultants, SAS, LED, IMG and CAPS doctors across our group. Your leadership will be central to ensuring this ambition becomes reality.

Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Fully registered medical practitioner with current GMC licence to practise and evidence of good standing for ≥5 years
- Trained and experienced medical appraiser, with evidence of completing appraiser training and undertaking appraisals in line with GMC requirements
Desirable criteria
- Postgraduate qualification or formal training in medical education, leadership, management or improvement science
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience supporting doctors across a range of grades, including doctors requiring additional support or intervention
- Experience working as a senior doctor within a complex NHS organisation
- Proven track record of clinical leadership (e.g. operational, educational or professional leadership roles) with evidence of service improvement, innovation or compliance delivery
- Demonstrable experience of clinical governance, including systems that support patient safety and quality improvement
- Evidence of managing, developing and engaging staff, including performance monitoring and feedback
- Proven experience of partnership working and stakeholder management across professional groups
Desirable criteria
- Experience of managing or contributing to MHPS, capability, conduct or fitness to practise processes
- Experience of designing, delivering or evaluating training programmes
- Demonstrable experience of delivering and managing medical appraisal, including quality assurance of appraisal outputs
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- In depth knowledge of medical appraisal and revalidation
- Working knowledge of the GMC framework for medical appraisal and revalidation, including supporting information requirements
- Clear understanding of the roles and responsibilities of medical appraisers and appraisal leads
- Knowledge of doctors’ professional responsibilities as set out in Good Medical Practice
- Knowledge of the current NHS and regulatory context, including the role of the GMC
- Applied understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion in professional processes

- Ability to set clear objectives and performance expectations and monitor delivery against agreed standards
- Demonstrable ability to influence, motivate and challenge senior clinicians constructively
- Strong time management and prioritisation skills, with evidence of meeting fixed deadlines
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to provide clear feedback and professional judgement
- Ability to work independently and autonomously, exercising sound professional judgement
- Behaves with integrity, openness and professionalism, acting as a credible role model
