Job description
The Opportunity Nottingham is a city with a prestigious industrial heritage—from the historical lace industry to its modern status as a leader in healthcare technology and sustainable manufacturing. We are seeking a creative and technically adept Design and Technology (DT) Teacher to join a 'Good' secondary school . In this role, you will inspire the next generation of designers and engineers, bridging the gap between imaginative concepts and functional prototypes. The Department & Creative Culture You will join a forward-thinking DT faculty that values innovation, sustainability, and high-quality craftsmanship across multiple disciplines. The school boasts specialized workshops equipped with traditional tools alongside modern CAD/CAM technologies, including 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC machinery. As a 'Good' school, we focus on a "maker-centered" pedagogy, encouraging students to solve real-world problems through iterative design and material testing. The department is a hub for STEM collaboration, frequently partnering with Nottingham’s vibrant "Maker" community and local engineering firms to provide students with industry-relevant insights. Core Responsibilities Instructional Excellence: Teaching Design and Technology across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 (GCSE), with opportunities to contribute to A-Level or BTEC Tech Awards for suitably qualified candidates. Technical Mastery: Guiding students through the properties of materials (timbers, polymers, and metals) and the application of electronic systems and programmable components. Design Innovation: Leading students through the design process—from initial sketching and 2D/3D modelling to the final evaluation of a functioning product. Workshop Safety: Maintaining the highest standards of Health and Safety, ensuring all students are proficient and safe in the use of hand tools and heavy machinery. Sustainability Advocacy: Integrating themes of the circular economy, responsible sourcing, and "design for life" into the curriculum to reflect modern environmental challenges. The Successful Candidate We are looking for a practitioner who is as comfortable with a chisel as they are with a digital design suite. Requirements include: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a degree in Design and Technology, Product Design, or a related Engineering field. Technical Breadth: Proficiency in a range of material areas and strong skills in CAD software (such as 2D Design, Fusion 360, or SolidWorks). Engagement & Inspiration: The ability to motivate students of all abilities, fostering a classroom environment where students feel confident to take creative risks and learn from failure. Collaborative Spirit: A proactive professional who is eager to share technical expertise and participate in the wider extracurricular life of the school’s STEM clubs. Why Join Us? A role in a school that views DT as a vital component of a modern curriculum, offering a supportive environment for professional growth and departmental investment. Access to specialized professional development through the Nottinghamshire and East Midlands teaching school hubs. The opportunity to work in Nottingham—a city offering a vibrant cultural scene, legendary history, and a high quality of life with extensive green spaces and affordable living. A warm, inclusive staff culture where technical innovation is encouraged and student creativity is celebrated. How to Apply Please submit your current CV and a digital portfolio or summary of your design specialisms to begin the application process for this DT Teacher position.
