Job description

a) Toundertake an unsupervised role in mammography and to assess and treat ownpatient workload and maintain associated records in an unsupervised area ofresponsibility. b) Activelyparticipate in and be responsible for the organisation of the radiographicteam and patient workload in an allocated area, working as the dutycoordinator. c) Undertakespecialised mammographic examinations. d) Towork alongside the multidisciplinary team in the symptomatic and screeningsetting. e) Toundertake a specific allocated role in the management of the department. Main duties of the job 1.Undertakea specialised clinical caseload of patients as an autonomous practitioner,including complex patients, using clinical reasoning skills, to provide dailypatient assessment and treatment, supporting appropriate and early discharge. 2.Obtainverbal informed consent from patients, or their carers. 3.Follow and proposes changes to standards and policies forclinical practice to ensure a co-ordinated and effective service. Thisincludes infection prevention. 4.Work as part of the multi-disciplinary team to ensureeffective communication and facilitate appropriate patient care. 5. Communicatesensitive information to patients/carers/staff, where there may be barriersto communication ensuring confidentiality and sensitivity to the audienceslevel of understanding and prior knowledge. 6. Beresponsible for keeping accurate and timely written and electronic patientrecords and statistical information. This may include written reports offunctional ability and specialist assessments. 7. Manageown time by prioritising competing service requirements, seeking guidancefrom senior staff where necessary. 8. Dayto day supervision, including training, of relevant team members whenrequired including practical, theoretical and clinical teaching of new staffentering speciality, medical and nursing students. Ensurethat all equipment is in good working order and ready for immediate use andreport any defective equipment or provision of supplies to managers. 10. Keepup to date with clinical developments, through audit and research, andparticipate in innovation and change concerned with improving the standardsof care for patients. 11. Reportand act on adverse incidents. 12.Managingown workload and organisation of colleagues as a daily duty co-ordinator andcontribute to staff rotas and daily planning. 13. Carry out front line patient care andmammographic examinations essential to diagnosis and treatment. Be able tocommunicate with and reassure patients and deal with complex distressingsituations such as patients who have had a recent cancer diagnosis. 14. Use dexterity, co-ordination and sensoryskills for accurate positioning and adapting technique for patients withadditional needs. 15. Responsible for quality assurance ofimaging and determining if additional views or repeats are necessary. 16. Assess the ability of patients who undergomammographic examinations and modify techniques accordingly such as forpatients in additional needs clinics. 17.Using own initiative, respond topatients and /or carers who are anxious about their condition and itsconsequences and be able to communicate with patients regardingcomplaints. 18. Ensure correct justification ofmammographic procedures keeping radiation doses as low as reasonablyachievable. 19. Responsible for adjusting exposure factorsbased on breast thickness for implant in situ. 20. Ensure comfort for patients fitted withcardiac devices adjusting technique as required. 21. Undertake tomosynthesis mammograms as wellas paddle and magnification views as necessary. 22. Responsible for checking the position ofthe wire placement prior to surgery, including different views such as alateral view. Person Specification Experience * Sound knowledge of IR(me)R 2000, IRR regulations and clinical governance * Knowledge and understanding of the NHS Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP and Quality Assurance Programmes (QA) * Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team * Evidence of continuing professional development * Experience of working in a breast screening unit * Communication * Working under pressure * Teamwork * Leadership * Time management * Working autonomously * Taking the initiative * Interpersonal skills * Experience of working in a breast screening unit Qualifications * Degree in Radiotherapy diagnostic or therapeutic or equivalent * Post Graduate Qualification in Mammography * HCPC registered * Experience of working in a breast screening unit Disclosure and Barring Service Check This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
