As part of the Outwood Family since 2018, we provide the very best, holistic education within a safe and secure community. About the Department: The Humanities department comprises 8 teachers including a Head of Faculty, a Second in Faculty, a Vice Principal, experienced teaching staff as well as ECT teachers. Most humanities lessons are taught in a dedicated building, with each teacher having their own classroom base. The building has its own staff room with kitchen facilities, as well as meeting space and rooms for intervention work. Classrooms are fully equipped with interactive television whiteboards and visualisers to support teaching and learning. The continuing professional development of staff is important here at Outwood Academy Hemsworth. Staff have access to a wide range of CPD, including a 6 day History Matters and Geography Matters course, as well as a number of one-off sessions focusing on teaching strategies and curriculum. Providing students with out of classroom opportunities is a key focus for the department. We currently provide opportunities for year 10 to visit Berlin to support their study of Weimar and Nazi Germany; year 7 geography students assess the sustainability of the academy and the local community through fieldwork.
Our Geography curriculum at KS3 is engaging and designed to help broaden the horizons of our students. Students are challenged to learn about physical and human processes and the interaction between them. Enquiries include ‘How am I linked to climate change’ and ‘Is tourism a blessing or a curse?’ Students complete a range of fieldwork studies both on site and at other locations. At GCSE we follow the AQA specification. The units we cover are Paper 1: Natural Hazards, Living World, Coasts and Rivers; Paper 2: Urban, Economic Change; Resource Management and Energy; Paper 3: Pre-Release and Fieldwork.
