Job description
Band 6 Rotational Respiratory Physiotherapist The closing date is 13 May 2026. Are you interested in Respiratory Physiotherapy? This exciting rotational opportunity is in the Respiratory Team as part of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. The specialties at the trust include acute Non‑Invasive Ventilation & Respiratory Support Units, regional Cystic Fibrosis centre, Home Mechanical Ventilation service including Paediatric Transition and Neuromuscular service, the Birmingham Regional Severe Asthma Service, Critical Care and Surgery. As a member of the Respiratory Team you will have opportunities to work as part of a 7‑day service covering all specialties across the trust. We are looking for an enthusiastic, self‑motivated, innovative physiotherapist with good clinical skills, excellent team‑working and time‑management abilities. You will work alongside specialist physiotherapists, providing respiratory care and rehabilitation to patients, while working closely with the multi‑professional team. You will have the opportunity to supervise physiotherapy students, junior physiotherapists and therapy support workers. Research and CPD opportunities are encouraged. This rotational role is based at Birmingham Heartlands and Good Hope Hospitals, but you may be required to work at any of the trust sites. This may involve temporary or permanent changes to your normal place of work. Main duties of the job Applicants will participate in the respiratory overnight on‑call system and 7‑day working rota within the Respiratory Therapy teams, treating both adult and paediatric patients, including the physiotherapist‑led NIV service. Main Duties & Tasks: * Hold responsibility for own caseload and for a defined area of the service or a particular patient type, working without direct supervision. Supervision takes the form of regular formal training and clinical reasoning sessions, peer review, case conferences. * Undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner and maintain associated records. * Assist with supervision, education and assessment of the performance of physiotherapy students to a graduate standard, working with universities to ensure the standard of practice and teaching meets the standards set by the degree level qualification. * Assist with the supervision, education and coordination of physiotherapy assistants, physiotherapy technical instructors and junior physiotherapists. Person Specification Qualifications * Diploma or degree in Physiotherapy. * Registered with Healthcare Professions Council (HCPC). * Good standard of general education including GCSE Maths and English grade C and above. * Evidence of CPD, including recent postgraduate training relevant to clinical specialty. * Member of specialist interest group. * Attendance at Clinical Educators course. Experience * Clinical experience enabling the post holder to manage a caseload of patients within this speciality / within the NHS, with experience of elderly and frail elderly, respiratory, neurological and musculoskeletal conditions. * Experience of working on a physiotherapy on‑call service. * Experience of working with student physiotherapists and assistants. * Ability to analyse clinical and non‑clinical complex facts and situations and interpret and compare a range of options. * Ability to plan, organise, formulate and adjust complex plans. * Ability to supervise and delegate work to physiotherapists, assistants and students. * It is desirable that the candidate has had some experience within the specialty area.
