Job description
Ranger - Hexham

Summary

***INTERNAL APPLICANTS ONLY***

As a Ranger, you’re a champion of nature conservation and the great outdoors, and you’ll play a crucial role in keeping the nation’s beloved countryside and coast in good shape, for wildlife and for people.

This is an exciting time to join the Hadrian’s Wall Country team, as there is great ambition to deliver for land, nature, climate and people.

Salary: 27,612 per annum

Contract Duration: Permanent

Working Pattern: 37.5 hours per week. The role will include regular weekend and occasional evening, early morning and bank holiday working on a rota. Core hours are 8am-4pm.

#LI-DNI

What it's like to work here

The Hadrian’s Wall portfolio is comprised of several properties in the Tyne Valley, each supporting a variety of priority habitats and species, in addition to significant archaeology and public access. Many of the sites are ‘highly’ designated for nature conservation, geology and archaeology

We welcome several thousand visitors every year, from local dog walkers to international tourists. The portfolio covers 5 properties in the Tyne valley including:

  • 6 miles of Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site, encompassing 6 Tenant Farms
  • Allen Bank & Staward Gorge: Northumberland's largest ancient semi-natural woodland
  • Bellister: a predominantly agricultural estate, covering 3 tenant farms and offering a ‘green lung’ for local people at Haltwhistle
  • Cherryburn: the birthplace of artist and engraver Thomas Bewick
  • George Stephenson’s birthplace

What you'll be doing

Working as part of the Countryside team, based from offices at Cherryburn, you will help manage and maintain the countryside and outdoors space of the Hadrian's Wall portfolio.

Your skills and experience will help deliver the nature and people ambitions of the portfolio as a whole. A small glimpse at some of the skills we will require are: undertaking habitat management, invasive species control, dry stone walling, access improvement works such as building steps and boardwalks, working with and leading volunteers, contractor management, wildlife management, undertaking felling and tree safety works, at all times working to the National Trust brand and values.

You’ll be helping to protect and care for habitats, wildlife, buildings and machinery. You’ll pass on your knowledge and enthusiasm to encourage others to love this area as much as you do. Whenever and wherever you come across people, you’ll take the time to talk to them and answer their questions, rather than rushing away to the next task.

You’ll make sure that the conservation work and outdoor experiences on the land in your care are of the highest standard. You’ll build relationships in the local community, proudly representing the Trust and letting people know about the work you and the team are doing.

You can view the full role profile for this role in the document attached. You don't need to have all the knowledge, skills and experience listed in the role profile; this is just to provide a full picture of what’s possible in this role.

Who we're looking for

We’d love to hear from you if you can demonstrate:

  • Practical conservation and land management experience, including hands-on habitat management techniques and countryside infrastructure construction and repair.
  • Competence in using machinery and equipment, evidenced by relevant certificates (e.g. chainsaw, brushcutter, ATV).
  • Strong commitment to safe working practices, including use of risk assessments and holding First Aid at Work with Forestry qualification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Experience working outdoors to manage land, access, and conservation sites, with a hard-working attitude and willingness to learn.
  • Experience managing people on site, including supervising and supporting volunteers and overseeing contractors.
  • Confident communicator, happy to engage with a wide range of people about conservation work and its importance.
  • Organised and responsible approach to work, able to follow guidelines, policies, and site procedures.
  • Full UK driving licence in order to travel around the portfolio in staff vehicle
