Become a Registered Nurse in the United Kingdom There are many foreign nurses in working in the United Kingdom either in a prestigious London hospital, a Manchester medical center, a Liverpool assisted‑living facility, or a Birmingham nursing home. Have you ever wonder that if you are a foreign nurse, it is important to undergo a time‑consuming process to enter the country as a registered nurse? Nurses who are looking for overseas jobs in the United Kingdom should follow the processing procedures set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), the nursing and midwifery regulator for England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Island. Follow these basic procedures when you want to process your requirements: 1. The NMC requires that your nursing credentials are verified. 2. To register with the NMC, you must first be registered in the country you trained in, and you must have at least 12 months of registered practice in the field for which you want to apply. 3. NMC requires you to meet its English language requirements with an International English Language Test Score (IELTS) of 7.0. 4. It is important to meet the full requirements of the UK’s immigration processes. Contact the educational organization UK NARIC for an academic equivalency check of your qualification in order to help with the immigration process. Its Statement of Comparability is an officially recognized document that confirms the recognition of an overseas qualification and its comparable level in the UK, irrespective of it being an academic, vocational or professional award. 5. The next step would be crafting a professional resume that should be sent to as many overseas nursing recruiters and healthcare firms. The National Health Service is the largest employer of nurses in the country. Practice your interview answering skills whether if you take an online or an actual face‑to‑face interview. While you’re still waiting for the results of your Statement of Comparability processing, keep yourself busy by doing some research on the possible you may be working with in the future. 6. For immigration concerns, contact the British embassy or consulate for more information. The UK Immigration Service (UKIS) implements a points‑based immigration system as a way regulating immigration to the country from outside the European Economic Area. 7. You have to know that the nursing profession has undergone many changes in role and regulation as nurses now work in diverse settings in hospitals, health centres, nursing facilities, and even in patients’ homes. The nursing profession in the UK is composed of first‑level nurses, second‑level nurses, and specialist nurses that include nurse practitioners, specialist community public health nurses, clinical nurse specialists, nurse consultants, lecturer‑practitioners, and lecturers. 8. If your NMC application meets their minimum standards, you will have to complete an overseas nursing program, which sets out common entry standards that includes a compulsory 20‑day period of protected learning and a period of supervised practice. It is strongly recommend that you secure your place on a program before travelling to the UK. 9. If your NMC registration is approved then you can begin your practice. 10. Once you live in the United Kingdom for many years, you can now apply for British citizenship once you meet certain immigration requirements.
