Job description
Senior Clinical Perfusion Scientist The closing date is 08 December 2026 University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us. Please see below for a detailed job description of the role. Main duties of the job University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) delivers a busy and complex cardiac and congenital cardiac surgery service, with our large perfusion team central to supporting safe care and achieving some of the strongest patient outcomes in England. We are seeking experienced Senior Clinical Perfusion Scientists to join our Cardiovascular and Thoracic care group, recognised as a regional centre of excellence. Successful applicants will be familiar with all adult cardiac surgical techniques, including cell salvage, point-of-care blood analysis, DHCA and ECMO. Paediatric and ACHD experience would be beneficial but is not essential. The department currently offers a 37.5-hour, 3-day working week. The Trust is offering a recruitment and retention premium for this role totalling £5,000 p.a. (pro rata) and can also provide relocation support. T&Cs will apply and can be discussed at interview. About us University Hospital Southampton is one of Englands largest acute teaching Trusts, offering a wide range of learning and development opportunities to support your career aspirations. Located on the south coast with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast. We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalizing your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information. At UHS were committed to providing a flexible working environment where possible. Whether you are balancing family, study, or your wellbeing with your career, we want to support you so you can help our patients. At UHS, we proudly champion individuality, recognizing that outstanding care is only possible with a diverse, inclusive team. Were committed to creating an anti‑racist, anti‑discriminatory environment where everyone feels valued, safe, and empowered to make a meaningful impact in our communities. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences to join us in building a healthcare community where everyone can belong, thrive, and contribute. Job responsibilities Currently, the cardiac team undertakes 1800 adults and 400 paediatric procedures per year across our five cardiac theatres. You must be accredited by the Society of Perfusionists of Great Britain & Ireland and registered with the College of Clinical Perfusionists of Great Britain & Ireland. This role attracts an additional Recruitment and Retention Premium (see details below), a contribution to relocation costs for eligible candidates as well as an exceptional NHSP rate for additional shifts. What were looking for: You will be a team player who can bring motivation and positivity to your work environment, happy to work autonomously and in possession of excellent verbal and written communication skills, with empathy and compassion at the heart of the care that you provide. You will be expected to deliver high quality care within the framework of a multi‑disciplinary team. You will be well supported by an experienced inter‑professional team. The successful applicant will be expected to carry out various administrative duties associated with the role and will be delegated additional responsibilities as required. Full participation in the department on‑call rota is essential. What we can offer you We are committed to supporting you in your career aspirations and recognise the significant contribution your skills and expertise make to patient care. We offer a number of benefits, including development, regular interaction with, and feedback from, leaders and the chance to work on some of the UKs leading cardiovascular research and development programmes. Currently the Trust is offering a recruitment and retention premium for this role totalling £5,000 p.a. (pro rata) and we are happy to provide support with relocation. T&Cs will apply and can be discussed at interview. Recruitment and Retention Premiums are not accessible to individuals who are moving from Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust or any NHS staff working within Hampshire or the Isle of Wight. These Trusts include; Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, Solent NHS Trust, Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust, Isle of Wight NHS Trust, South Central Ambulance NHS Trust. How to apply Attached you will find the person specification document which provides more detail about the essential and desirable skills and experience needed for this role. We highly recommend you review this document and use it when completing your application as these criteria are used by hiring managers as guidance during shortlisting. We offer comprehensive training in any areas of clinical practice and therefore welcome applicants who do not possess all the required skills and experience. For an overview of the main duties of the role please see the Job Description and Main Responsibilities section below. To understand the day‑to‑day responsibilities in more detail please read the full job description document attached.
