The Opportunity:

From local roots to global impact. Be part of something bigger.

Join the University of Edinburgh and you’ll be making a difference to everything around you. Be part of something bigger — where you’ll do meaningful work, grow and progress, be rewarded and recognised, and benefit from our strong commitment to your wellbeing. There are so many reasons to join us.

The University of Edinburgh is a world-class organisation. We look for the best in the field across all disciplines and provide a working environment where academics can develop their careers and passion for their chosen subject area. We offer the full range of academic roles and have a genuine focus on our student’s performance and wellbeing.

We are looking for an experienced equine clinician with a demonstrable focus on sports medicine (particularly lameness diagnostics and advanced imaging) to join our clinical team and take a leading role in the provision and development of the sports medicine service provided by our equine hospital and practice.

This is a unique opportunity to join or lead (depending on experience) the team growing the discipline of equine sports medicine within a top-ranking UK veterinary school. In conjunction with our talented and dedicated equine team, the post holder will work within a highly-equipped equine hospital where they will contribute to the continued development of our clinical caseload and take responsibility for cases at referral level. Beyond the standard medical and surgical caseload, the hospital has well-developed cardiology, respiratory, orthopaedic, diagnostic imaging and behavioural medicine services, with significant clinical and research expertise in each area. We are now in a position to recruit a dedicated person capable of driving an integrated “performance driven sports medicine” service.

We have the necessary breadth of clinical expertise, research reputational standing and advanced imaging modalities to fully support growth in this service. Current/recent complimentary research activities within the division include fracture risk assessment (multimodal imaging and biomarkers), osteoarthritis biomarker discovery, T2 cartilage mapping, advanced cardiac imaging and cardiac mapping (arrhythmias) and multi-omics assessment of mild equine asthma and training-associated immune dysregulation. The post-holder will also have the opportunity to work in conjunction with our behavioural medicine team to develop a better understanding of the relationship between pain and behavioural changes with a view to collectively developing a more comprehensive and formulated approach to the investigation and management of such cases.

They will be involved in teaching and practical training of veterinary undergraduate students and postgraduate clinical scholars (residents) and will be encouraged to undertake clinical research in their field of expertise, thus enhancing the professional reputation of the equine service and contributing to the research output of the division and the school. Collaborative research is encouraged and there is extensive opportunity for cross-campus collaboration. In addition, the post holder will assist with initiatives aimed at the promotion of equine welfare and will have the opportunity to contribute towards the efforts of the Division of General Practice in supporting the equine industry in remote and rural parts of Scotland. There will also be the option to undertake racecourse veterinary duties at 2 of Scotland’s racecourses as part of our existing team.

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • A Veterinary Degree registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons as a practising member of the profession.
  • General equine sports medicine skills, with a particular focus on/interest in orthopaedics and diagnostic imaging.
  • Further specialist qualification, preferably ECVSMR/ACVSMR; however, ECVS/ACVS Diploma-holders with a demonstrable sports medicine interest are very much encouraged to apply. Residency trained board eligible candidates in the appropriate speciality are encouraged to contact us in the first instance – please see contact details below.
  • Interest in fulfilling the remit of a clinical academic working within a veterinary school setting (i.e., engagement with teaching, learning and assessment)
  • Demonstrable commitment to develop their own, and contribute to the School’s clinical research output.
  • Desirable (not essential): Higher degree (Masters /PhD) in a relevant discipline

The post holder will join a dynamic team who are committed to delivering gold standard patient and client care whilst also training the next generation of primary care veterinarians.

The academic environment provides many opportunities for CPD and career progression.

People have always been at the heart of our work. As part of the University, you are a part of our community. We are looking for people with drive, determination, and a passion for what they do. We are a place where everyone is welcome and offer a range of policies and benefits designed to support you in building the right meaningful/personalised flexibility for you.

A career with us has a range of other benefits that can be tailored to your lifestyle:
