Job description
A vibrant and high-energy secondary school in Bristol is seeking a motivated and "hands-on" Assistant Site Manager to join its busy facilities team immediately. This role is perfect for a Senior Caretaker looking to take the next step in their career or an experienced tradesperson seeking a stable leadership role within a large educational estate. Key Responsibilities Daily Site Operations: Assisting the Site Manager in the day-to-day running of the estate, including the direct supervision and timetabling of the cleaning team and junior site assistants. Reactive Maintenance: Responding rapidly to breakages, plumbing issues, or electrical faults reported by staff through the internal helpdesk, ensuring minimal disruption to teaching and learning. Compliance Testing: Performing and documenting statutory weekly and monthly testing of fire alarms, emergency call points, and legionella water temperature checks to meet rigorous health and safety audits. Grounds Management: Managing external contractors for landscaping, sports pitch maintenance, and arboriculture, ensuring the campus remains safe and aesthetically pleasing for students. Sustainability: Monitoring the school’s complex Building Management System (BMS) to ensure heating, ventilation, and lighting are used efficiently to reduce the school's carbon footprint and utility costs. Safety Audits: Assisting with termly health and safety walk-arounds with the Board of Governors, identifying areas for physical improvement, and maintaining the school's risk assessment register. The Ideal Candidate Will Have Prior school experience is essential: You must have a thorough understanding of working within a school environment, including an awareness of safeguarding and how site works affect the school day. Significant experience in building maintenance or site management within a public sector or large-scale educational setting. A trade background (e.g., Electrical, Plumbing, or Carpentry) is highly desirable to allow for in-house repairs. Good ICT skills for managing the online maintenance helpdesk, digital compliance logs, and email correspondence. The ability to lead a small team effectively and communicate clearly with the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) regarding site priorities.
