Job description
The Opportunity Scarborough offers a unique coastal classroom, from the diverse marine ecosystems of the North Sea to the ancient woodland of the nearby North York Moors. We are seeking an ambitious and visionary Head of Biology to lead our high-achieving department. This is a pivotal middle-leadership role where you will be responsible for the strategic direction of the Biology curriculum, the professional development of your team, and the academic outcomes of students across all Key Stages. The Department & Leadership Role You will lead a dedicated team of Biology specialists and a senior technician, reporting directly to the Head of Science. As Head of Biology, you will have autonomy over the A-Level Biology curriculum (e.g., AQA or OCR), ensuring it is intellectually stimulating and bridges the gap to undergraduate study. The department boasts university-standard microscopy equipment, digital sensors for field studies, and a long-standing tradition of excellence in the "Required Practicals." You will be the lead advocate for the "Living Sciences," ensuring Biology remains a flagship subject that attracts high enrolment at Post-16. Core Responsibilities Strategic Leadership: Designing and implementing a "spiral curriculum" that builds deep conceptual links between cell biology, genetics, and ecology from Year 7 through to Year 13. Pedagogical Excellence: Mentoring staff in the department, conducting peer observations, and modelling "best practice" in the delivery of complex topics like statistical analysis in biology. Curriculum Innovation: Integrating local environmental contexts into the schemes of work, such as the impact of coastal erosion on local biodiversity or the physiological adaptations of marine life. Data & Intervention: Analysing student performance data to identify trends, implementing targeted interventions for underperforming sub-groups, and ensuring "stretch and challenge" for high-attainers. STEM Partnerships: Expanding the department’s external links, including collaboration with regional wildlife trusts, university outreach programs, and coordinating the Biology Olympiad. The Successful Candidate We are looking for a "Subject Expert" with the leadership gravitas to inspire both staff and students. Requirements include: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a strong honors degree in Biology or a closely related field. Proven Track Record: Extensive experience teaching Biology at Key Stage 5 with a history of outstanding student results. Leadership Potential: Either an experienced middle leader or a highly motivated teacher looking to take their first step into a Head of Department role. Technical Mastery: Deep knowledge of the A-Level practical endorsement requirements and a commitment to maintaining the highest health and safety standards. Why Join Us? A role with significant influence over the academic culture of a large, supportive Science faculty. Access to specialized leadership CPD, including the NPQML (National Professional Qualification for Middle Leadership) or equivalent training. The opportunity to work in a historic seaside town that offers a high quality of life, affordable housing, and some of the best coastline in the UK. A school that treats Biology as a critical pathway for students entering the medical, environmental, and veterinary professions. How to Apply Please submit your current CV to begin the application process for this Head of Biology position.
