Job description
A secondary school located in the coastal town of Scarborough is seeking an experienced and motivated Head of Science to lead its Science faculty from September . This is a key leadership position suited to a confident classroom practitioner who is ready to guide curriculum development, support staff, and drive strong outcomes across Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. The school serves a diverse community and places strong emphasis on maintaining consistent teaching standards and clear departmental structures. Science is a core subject area, and the successful candidate will play a central role in shaping its future direction. About the Role As Head of Science , you will lead a team of specialist teachers delivering lessons across Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4, and Key Stage 5 . The role combines classroom teaching responsibilities with departmental leadership, ensuring that curriculum delivery remains consistent, engaging, and aligned with national expectations. You will oversee planning across all three science disciplines, ensuring schemes of work support progression and challenge for learners of varying abilities. Supporting staff development will form a major part of the role, including mentoring early career teachers and promoting collaborative planning. This position offers the opportunity to influence whole-school improvement through strong subject leadership and clear academic direction. Leadership Responsibilities Your responsibilities will extend beyond classroom teaching and into departmental management. Key aspects of the role include: Leading the Science department across Biology, Chemistry, and Physics Monitoring teaching standards and supporting staff performance Managing departmental resources, equipment, and budgets Coordinating assessment and tracking student progress Supporting practical science delivery and maintaining safety standards Contributing to whole-school improvement planning Strong organisational skills and the ability to lead by example will be essential. Department & School Environment The Science department includes dedicated laboratory spaces and shared preparation areas designed to support practical learning. Staff work collaboratively and share resources to ensure consistency across year groups. The school leadership team promotes structured systems and clear expectations, helping staff maintain a calm and productive learning environment. Students are encouraged to engage actively with practical science and develop strong investigative skills.
