Job description
The Opportunity Northampton is a key economic hub in the East Midlands, situated within the "Golden Triangle" of UK logistics and home to a diverse range of financial services and manufacturing firms. We are seeking a dynamic Economics Teacher to join our Social Sciences faculty. In this role, you will empower students to deconstruct the world around them—from the mechanics of local housing markets to the complexities of global trade wars and inflationary pressures. The Department You will join a high-profile department where Economics is a top-tier choice for students aiming for Russell Group universities and degree apprenticeships. The faculty prioritizes "Real-World Economics," frequently using live data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and the Bank of England to ground theoretical models. We are equipped with dedicated ICT suites for econometric research and stock market simulations, allowing students to see the immediate impact of fiscal and monetary policy. We maintain strong links with Northampton’s business community, providing opportunities for students to engage with local entrepreneurs and financial analysts through guest lectures and workshops. Core Responsibilities Curriculum Delivery: Teaching Microeconomics and Macroeconomics at A-Level (AQA or Edexcel) and supporting the delivery of Business or Finance modules at Key Stage 4. Economic Modelling: Guiding students through the application of core models, such as Aggregate Demand/Aggregate Supply (AD/AS) and the Price Mechanism, ensuring they can shift curves with precision and explain the underlying logic. Current Affairs Integration: Leading daily "Market Minutes" or news reviews to help students link textbook theory to current events, such as interest rate decisions or changes in international trade agreements. Quantitative Skills: Coaching students in the mathematical demands of the subject, including the calculation of elasticities, index numbers, and the interpretation of complex Lorenz Curves. Exam Preparation: Providing targeted support for high-stakes examinations, focusing on the "Chain of Reasoning" required for top-mark evaluative essays. The Successful Candidate We are looking for an analytical thinker who can make the "dismal science" feel vibrant and essential. Requirements include: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a degree in Economics, Finance, or a related Social Science. Subject Mastery: A deep understanding of both classical and Keynesian economic thought, with the ability to explain competing schools of theory. Analytical Flair: The ability to teach students how to evaluate the effectiveness of government intervention and the limitations of free-market outcomes. Engagement: A creative approach to teaching, perhaps using game theory simulations or behavioural economics experiments to engage students. Why Join Us? A school that values Economics as a gateway subject for high-level careers in law, politics, and finance. Access to specialized CPD focused on the latest developments in Behavioural Economics and Environmental Macroeconomics. A supportive, professional staff culture in a town that offers excellent value for money, diverse housing, and a central location. Strategically located for commuters, with Northampton being just an hour from London and Birmingham via the M1 and West Coast Main Line. How to Apply Please submit your current CV to begin the application process for this Economics Teacher position.
