About the Role

Level: 4

Department: Software Engineering

Location: Southampton

Contract type: Permanent

At Quilter, technology plays a critical role in enabling business transformation, improving customer outcomes, and modernising our digital estate. We are continually evolving our platforms, practices, and capabilities to deliver secure, resilient, and customer centric digital solutions.

You are a hands-on engineer who takes ownership of the development and delivery for a product or service area, acting as a role model for engineering excellence, and providing leadership and guidance to other engineers and software developers. The role also has a focus on technical leadership, delivery ownership, and promoting and raising standards within the team.

You collaborate with Product Owners, Architects, QA, and Platform teams to design and deliver high-quality, secure, and scalable solutions aligned to Quilter’s technology strategy.

This role is well suited to an experienced senior developer who wants to influence outcomes, mentor others, and lead by example while remaining close to the code.

Technical Leadership & Delivery

  • Take ownership of the design, development, and delivery of high-quality .NET solutions across the full software development lifecycle.
  • Lead technical decision making within the team, ensuring alignment with Quilter standards and architectural direction in close collaboration with the Quilter Architecture team.
  • Design and build scalable, resilient, and secure RESTful APIs and backend services.
  • Write clean, testable, and maintainable code, setting the quality bar for the team.
  • Perform detailed code reviews and support complex problem solving.

Team‑Level Leadership & Mentoring

  • Act as a senior technical role model, supporting and mentoring less experienced developers.
  • Provide day‑to‑day technical guidance and leadership within the development team.
  • Encourage strong engineering practices, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Support onboarding of new engineers and knowledge sharing within the team.

Ways of Working & Quality

  • Champion clean code, automated testing, and CI/CD good practices.
  • Embed modern DevSecOps practices, including pipeline automation and quality gates.
  • Ensure solutions meet security, resilience, and regulatory expectations appropriate to a financial services environment.
  • Contribute to improving development standards, patterns, and tooling across the engineering community.
  • Leverage AI to drive productivity and quality improvements in both your own work and in the work of the team

Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Work in partnership with Product Owners to help shape and refine technical solutions that support business outcomes.
  • Collaborate with Architects to ensure solutions align with target architecture and longer‑term strategy.
  • Communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.

About You

You are a highly capable senior engineer with strong technical depth and the confidence to lead at a team level through influence and expertise.

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Significant experience developing enterprise‑grade solutions using C# / .NET / .NET Core.
  • Strong experience designing and delivering RESTful APIs and distributed backend services.
  • Experience building and supporting Azure‑hosted workloads.
  • Proven use of CI/CD pipelines (e.g. Azure DevOps) and automated testing techniques.
  • Strong understanding of software design principles, patterns, and testability.
  • Experience integrating backend services with React, Next.js, or Ionic front‑end applications.
  • Experience working in Agile / Scrum delivery environments.
  • Experience working with AI tools, (e.g. GitHub co-pilot, Cowork, etc)

Leadership & Behaviours

  • Demonstrate leadership through technical expertise, collaboration, and proactive ownership.
  • Comfortable mentoring others while remaining accountable for personal delivery.
  • Able to influence technical decisions constructively without formal authority.
  • Pragmatic and outcome‑focused, with a balanced approach to quality and delivery.
  • Actively seeks opportunities to improve systems, processes, and ways of working.
